Rosie could barely sit still in front of the TV, practically bouncing with excitement. “Mom, look! That’s Uncle Jackson!”
Mandy lifted her chin with pride and smiled. “That’s him, alright. He’s spent half his life serving our country, and now his hard work is finally paying off.”
Rosie let out a triumphant snort. “No one will ever mess with us again.”
Mandy gave her a sharp look. “Rosie, he warned us yesterday. He’s just started this new position. He can’t afford any slip-ups, so you need to keep your head down and not make any trouble that could hurt him.”
After spending time in jail, Mandy saw things much more clearly. If anyone in the Gibson family became a burden to Jackson, he wouldn’t hesitate to cut them off. She knew that first-hand. That was Jackson’s way of sending a message, and she got it loud and clear.

Rosie huffed. “But how long are we supposed to put up with this? I’m so over Lydia. I wish she would just disappear for good.”
“Rosie, how many times do I have to tell you? You need to be patient. It’s never too late to get revenge.”
Rosie rolled her eyes but backed down. “I get it, Mom. I’m just venting. I’ll follow Uncle’s plan, whatever it is.”
Mandy nodded, satisfied. “Oh, and I heard Alfie stood up for you at the academic competition and even challenged Lydia because of you. That says a lot about how serious he is, Rosie. Don’t take it for granted.”
Rosie just looked disgusted. “Mom, can we not talk about him? He’s such an idiot. Everyone thinks he’s some computer genius, but he couldn’t even beat Lydia.”
Mandy shook her head. “Lydia’s sneaky and has powerful people on her side. Our whole family can’t figure out how to deal with her. It’s not fair to expect Alfie to win against her all by himself.”
Rosie groaned. “But Mom, he ran naked across the Capital College field. He’s a total joke now. There’s

If it weren’t for your uncle, do you think they’d ever agree to this marriage?”
Rosie scowled. “I just don’t like him. That’s it.”
Mandy softened her tone. “You’re both still in school anyway. The wedding isn’t happening anytime soon. Take your time, there’s no rush.”
Rosie let out a frustrated sigh and turned her attention back to the TV. Suddenly, the camera cut to a different angle, and she caught a glimpse of a face she recognized. Before she could get a bette look, the shot switched back to the main stage. Her heart skipped “Mom, I think I just saw Lydia. She was in the VIP stands.”
Mandy just laughed. “You’re so fixated on her, you’re seeing things. She’s just a student. There’s no way she’d be sitting in the official viewing stands. Maybe somewhere in the crowd, but not up there.”
Rosie frowned, still unsure. “But I really think I saw her
Mandy’s voice was firm. “Rosie, I mean it. Be patient. Lydia and the Jefferson family -they won’t get away with anything.”
After the ceremony, Lydia slipped away, hoping not to draw any attention. On her
way out, she almost bumped straight into a group of officials.
It was Jackson, fresh from the parade, surrounded by his entourage. His gaze swept
across the crowd and landed on Lydia, lingering there for a moment.
Trying to act casual, Lydia kept walking toward the exit, pretending she hadn’t noticed him.
But Jackson called out to her. “Excuse me, miss. Would you wait a moment?”
