The judges leaned forward, eyes bright with hope. “Juan, have you solved the problem?”
Juan walked up to the front, taking his time. “I heard the medical competition just ended, and Lydia came in first. She’s the national top scorer, right? If she’s that good, her math must be incredible too. Why don’t we invite her over and see if she can crack this? We’re getting nowhere just sitting here.”

The judges glanced at each other, then looked to Mr. Gartner, the most respected of them all. They were clearly curious.
Mr. Gartner hesitated, thinking it over. “But Lydia is a medical student. Are we sure it’s appropriate to ask her to solve a math problem?”
Lucinda jumped in, “We’re just asking for her thoughts, nothing more. If she doesn’t want to, or if she can’t solve it, we won’t make a fuss.”
Juan shot Lucinda a surprised look, not expecting her to be so eager. He was confused for a second.
Actually, it was Daisy who’d told Juan to pull this stunt. She wanted to see Lydia humiliated in front of everyone, to ruin her national top scorer reputation.

Mr. Gartner was clearly interested too. He’d always been curious about this perfect- scoring student.
“Well, shall we invite her over, then?”

Lydia had just finished her competition, with everyone watching her in awe.
Daisy, desperate to get out of their bet, faked a faint right in front of her.
