She didn’t know whether to laugh or be shocked. “It’s beautiful just as it is,” she said, feeling a little overwhelmed.
The buildings really did remind her of a royal garden, elegant and peaceful. She could tell some parts had been renovated over the years. There were buildings with wooden beams and gray tiles on the roof, giving off that traditional, timeless vibe. Others were made of brick and stone, with beautiful carvings on the walls that made them look grand and stately.
There were big common areas like living and dining rooms, a cozy study, and more private spaces for bedrooms, the kitchen, and storage. Every inch of the place felt both dignified and incredibly warm, like a real home where people actually lived and laughed. It wasn’t just a house; it felt like somewhere you could actually relax and let your worries fade away.
Mr. Jefferson looked pleased. “So, does that mean you like the style?” His eyes sparkled with hope.
Lydia hesitated. The question felt loaded, and she worried that saying she liked it might make him read too much into things. After all, she had barely stepped inside, and he was already talking about tearing down walls for her.
Connor seemed to sense her uncertainty and spoke up. “Grandpa, even if Lydia and
I get married, we’ll want a place of our own at some point.”

Predictably, Mr. Jefferson looked delighted. “Of course, you young people want your own space. You’d get bored of hanging around an old man like me all day. Just come home often and stay whenever you want. That’s all I ask.” He chuckled, clearly thinking ahead to
grandchildren and family gatherings.
Lydia felt like the conversation was getting way ahead of itself. Before Mr. Jefferson could get any more excited, she said quietly, “Grandpa Samuel, it’s a little early for that.”
Marriage was the last thing on her mind right now.
Still, Mr. Jefferson kept smiling. “No harm in planning early.” He seemed completely unbothered, as if he already knew everything would work out.
When they reached the main living room, Lydia’s attention was immediately caught by the coffee table, which was absolutely packed with snacks. There were so many treats that they’d overflowed onto the long redwood dining table, which was covered with delicate pastries and steaming tea.
