I can tell that this is making him tense and I want to be there for him—I mean that is what I am doing. the slight touches, the little mind links of assurance. I don’t want him to take this as the end of the world. I see it in his eyes. His father’s opinion is very important to him and I get that. I felt the same way when mine was still alive. Even now, I wish he could get to know Lanis. I wish he got the chance to see how amazing the man I am with is. Lanis and dad would have gotten along.
They have the same views on things. They are both calm and understanding. The only reason why my father was clouded was Uncle Fallon. He deceived him a lot. Made him question all his decisions and that is why most times, he ended up fucking things up.
After we are all done eating and trying to make up awkward conversations. We decide to call it a night and by we, Belis makes a comment about having work early tomorrow morning. It didn’t even seem like he wanted to be here but he seems like the kind of person that would do anything for Cranwell and that is why he is here in the first place.
I can bet my life on that.

“It is pretty late,’’ Cranwell stands up and everyone else follows suit. I guess even when he is not in the comfort of his home. He still likes to take charge. My Alpha instincts want to kick in but I also don’t want to mess things up for Lanis. The fact that they are all leaving and there was no fight is perfect.
“Can I talk to you alone before you leave?’’ Lanis faces Belis. I furrow my brows in confusion because I didn’t know he wanted to do this. I don’t think it is a good idea to confront him right now. the guy has been acting like a major ass hat and I don’t want to leave him alone with my baby.
“It is pretty late. I just want to go home,’’ his link is next to him. she was quiet all night. I don’t even know how she sounds because apart from the hello. I don’t think she has really even said anything.
“Just five minutes,’’ he pleads. I raise a brow at him but he glances away from my eyes, probably avoiding me. this isn’t part of the plan but I can’t stop him, it is his brother. It will be wrong of me to tell him not to have a conversation with his brother.
“Okay,’’ they walk side by side after Belis agrees and we are all left in this awkward silence. I just want this night to end and I am sure that they can all tell.
“Awkward right?’’ Darrien nudges me, just as Eligio walks over to me.
“Very.,’’ I confess.
“Father is already over his anger. There is no need for Alanis to continue trying to push for family reunions.’’ Eligio tells me.
“Especially since this was not something that we used to do. I think he should just let it rest for now.’’
I know what they mean but I think the pregnancy has a lot to do with this. I mean, he is extra emotional right now and I know he wants his family to be involved in our babies’ lives. I don’t mind it because I want them to know their vampire side. They need to know how they are and I will help him in any way that I can.
“I know. He just needs to know that you all will be involved.”
“You know I will always be here. Even if I and Jabi are not in the community anymore. We will show up for the kids,’’ he winks and I feel at ease with this statement.
“Same here, you can count on me being there. You guys don’t have to worry about a thing. Those kids will have all the family they need.’’
It warms my heart to know this and suddenly I feel like I don’t have to worry about Lanis’s family. They are good people. People that have been here. Through all the problems with Cassius. Through everything.
I hear a sound from the other room. The one that Lanis and Belis walked into. at first, I think it is in my head but the second I hear the riffling of a shelf and then the turns from everyone, I do the first thing I can think of. I run into the room, completely ignoring everyone and everything. all thoughts go to Lanis and my hopes that he is safe. I walk into the room just as Belis pushes him to one of the bookshelves in the study. He doesn’t try to fight him back. it is almost like Belis has lost his fucking mind. My mind goes to my babies. I lose all my senses in that moment as I run over to intervene before he can lay another finger on my mate. Lanis turns to me and tries to block me but I am too far gone as I turn in a split second and trample on Belis. It is almost like my wolf has taken over. the anger that I thought I have been able to control comes out as I start to defend the only person that matters.
“Stop it,’’ Lanis shouts.
At first, I can’t.
I want to stop but I can’t.
My wolf is very angry and it seems like there is nothing I can do. Belis pushes me off him and tries to run out of the room with his superspeed but I am faster. somehow, the anger is giving me this strength. I am on him as fast as he got me off him and I bite and scratch him all over, completely ignoring all the blood.
“Stop it, beau. He wasn’t hurting me. Please stop it.” Lanis’s voice is louder this time. I freeze for a second, as I see the damage on the person that was supposed to be a guest. His eyes are closed. He is unconscious.
It is almost like he stopped fighting.
Like he gave in to my attack.
Fuck.
