I follow the wolf and even though I am so sure that this is Jabi’s wolf. I don’t want to just jump in and believe it, just from seeing it. I need to make sure. The sky is already dark and I feel scared that this is just another trick. My hopes are way up but I am worried, that I will be disappointed.
His wolf peers at me from a tree and I see his eyes as they shine under the dark sky. My heart races as I move close to the tree and he doesn’t run away. He stands still, looking at me, watching me, before he lies down and rolls out his back. I kneel down and stroke his fur and he thumps his tail at me and purrs and his eyes close. And now I am sure that it is Jabi…
I don’t even know what this means, I don’t know how this is even possible. My hands touch his fur and I feel everything I am supposed to feel. There is something missing. Like a part of him is not here.
Where are you Jabi?
I send him a mind link.
I don’t expect a response but I am hopeful. I wish he can hear me right now but I also know that it is too much to ask for.
“Where are you Jabi,’’ I ask his wolf as I slowly pet him. His eyes look up to mine and I feel everything. I feel the love and the pain and the loneliness. I feel everything and I know he can feel it too. His eyes shut again as he nuzzled his head into my lap.
“I need you to help me find him,’’ I add because I know that he can. I know that he will. “He is lost and I need you to help me–that has to be the reason why you are here. Help me connect to him.”
I feel him sniffing, then he starts to whine. I know that he is unhappy.
“Please,” I whisper as I stroke his fur. I know that this is what he needs me to do.
I wait. I wait. I wait. I touch him again. I send him a mind link and I ask him to show me where Jabi is and this time, something shifts. Something changes and it feels like I am being transported into another world.
One that is far away from the community.
It is a forest, very deep and tangled and a whole lot of trees and I smell the ocean. My eyes are open to my environment even though I know that I am not really here right now. This is all in my head but this is the most real I have felt all this while. In front of me is a clearing. His wolf stands there and he looks at something I know that it is Jabi.
“Look for him,’’ a voice says from behind me. It is not Jabi’s voice and I know that this is not even a real voice, it is just a well-made up one.
I look at Jabi’s wolf and he starts to walk into the woods. I follow him instantly because this is what I have been hoping for. Some type of lead that will bring him back to me.
I follow his path and he stops and I look at him as I see his eyes glowing. I know that I am going to see him at last.
I walk toward him his wolf, who is in front of a small cave. I don’t know where this is, I don’t even know how to get to this strange place but I crouch until I get into the cave. It is almost like a bright shining light, almost like the heavens are showing me exactly where he is.
Once I see him my heart races and a million thoughts run through my mind. How can I be so happy? How is this possible? I am overwhelmed with joy and relief.
He is not dead, no. My Jabi is alive. He has just been stuck away from the world. I look at him as he is curled up in a ball, asleep.
I am close to him and I place my hand on his shoulder and he wakes up. He opens his eyes and he looks at me at first with confusion but I watch as his eyes shift to his wolf at the back of me and that surprised expression vanishes immediately. He smiles at me and it is so beautiful. He looks at me with his sparkling eyes and we look at each other for a while.
We are still and then he just slowly gets up and jumps into my arms. The fact that I can feel him right now, even though I know that I am not really there, is everything to me. He is in my arms and I close my eyes and I just feel happy.
Yeah, I know this is not the right time to do this. I need all the information I can get to fund him but for just a second, I feel him–I mean, really feel him.
“You’re really here,’’ he whispers into my ear. The sound of his voice on this cold night sends chills down my spine as I hold him.
Nothing else matters because in this moment, I can feel him, which just means that I will be able to find him.
“I am here,’’ I tell him, even though I need to let him know that I really am not. I want to do all that but for just this minute, I want to hold him. I don’t ever want to let him go even though I know that I will have to.
I have tried my best to shelter Jabi, protect him but for the first time, I think he might have to protect himself until I get to him.
I really wish that wasn’t the case.
