Chapter 83:
“I don’t know how to do this,” she admitted, her voice cracking on the last word. “I don’t know how to be your wife. I don’t know how to be anything other than alone.”
Jarrod’s expression shifted. The hard, demanding edge softened by a fraction. He slid his hand from her chest to the side of her neck, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw with surprising gentleness.
“Then stop trying to be alone,” he said quietly. “Stop fighting me. Stop fighting yourself.”
Caroline closed her eyes. A single tear slipped down her cheek, catching the faint glow of the streetlights.
She didn’t pull away.
Jarrod didn’t let her pull away.
His large hand moved from her chin and clamped onto the back of her head, his fingers tangling deep in her hair. He held her skull completely still and took absolute control of the kiss.

He tilted his head and parted her lips with a ruthless, starving intensity. His tongue swept into her mouth, hot and demanding, tasting the sweet, frantic panic on her breath.
Caroline let out a soft, helpless whimper.
Her brain completely shut down. The world outside the armored SUV ceased to exist. There was only the dark cabin, the sound of the rain, and the overwhelming, consuming heat of Jarrod Romero.
His left hand slid down her spine. He gripped the hem of her trench coat and pushed it aside, his rough palm sliding over the thin cotton of her t-shirt. He traced the curve of her waist, his finger pressing firmly into her skin.
The touch was electric. Caroline arched her back, pressing her chest flush against his tactical vest.
Her hands moved on their own. She gripped the thick fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer, her fingernails digging into his shoulders. Her right hand slipped, her fingers brushing against a patch of fabric that was distinctly damp and sticky. The sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood flared in her senses. Her body went rigid for a split second, the nurse in her screaming to assess the wound, but Jarrod’s kiss deepened, a punishing wave of heat that swallowed her professional instincts whole. The alarm was sounding in the back of her mind, but for now, desire was drowning it out.
She kissed him back with a desperate, matching hunger, her tongue tangling with his.
The temperature in the car skyrocketed. The windows fogged over, completely obscuring the streetlights outside.
Jarrod’s hand moved higher, his thumb brushing against the underside of her breast.
Caroline gasped into his mouth. A violent shiver racked her body. She melted against him, all the fight completely drained from her muscles. She was entirely at his mercy.
Just as she felt like she was going to spontaneously combust, Jarrod stopped.
He pulled his mouth away.
He rested his forehead against hers. His chest was heaving like he had just run a marathon. His eyes were closed, his jaw locked tight as he fought a massive internal battle for control.
Caroline slumped against him, her head resting on his shoulder. She was panting, her lips bruised and swollen. Her eyes were glazed over with raw desire.
