Chapter 323:
She stretched her stiff muscles under the duvet and immediately noticed that the space beside her on the bed was empty.
Jarrod was gone, likely called away to manage base operations or deal with the fallout of his interrupted debrief.
She sat up, the oversized tactical shirt slipping off one shoulder. The stark room was completely silent.
Feeling a slight thirst, Caroline swung her bare legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, her balance still a little unsteady.

She walked over to the small metallic desk in the corner, looking for a bottle of water.
The desk was meticulously organized, holding a secure laptop, a few encrypted hard drives, and a stack of thick military manuals.
She found a sealed plastic water bottle hidden behind the manuals, cracked it open, and took a long, refreshing drink.
As she set the bottle down, her weak legs trembled and she stumbled, her hip bumping hard against the corner of the heavy steel desk. The impact sent a dull thud through the room, and a nearly invisible seam on the desk’s underside popped open with a soft click. A small, metal-lined compartment, held shut by a magnetic latch, dropped down an inch.
A profound, suffocating vulnerability gnawed at her, triggering her deeply ingrained CIA instincts. Her gaze drifted to the dislodged compartment. She hesitated for only a second before her trained curiosity took over, and she carefully pulled it open. Inside, beneath a stack of encrypted flash drives, lay a small, worn object.
She slowly pulled it out. It was a slightly faded Polaroid photograph.
Her breath caught sharply in her throat. The photograph showed a stunningly beautiful woman with dark hair and striking features.
The woman in the photo was laughing, looking back over her shoulder with an expression of pure, unadulterated joy and intimacy.
In the background, a much younger Jarrod was visible, looking at the woman with a softness Caroline had never seen.
Caroline’s heart dropped into her stomach. A sudden, icy chill washed over her entire body.
She flipped the photo over. On the back, written in Jarrod’s distinct, sharp handwriting, was a single word: “Elena.”
The name echoed in Caroline’s mind. She had never heard him mention an Elena. The entire penthouse in DC held zero trace of any other woman.
Yet here, in his most private, secure military sanctuary, he kept a hidden photograph of her inside a concealed tactical lockbox.
A toxic, suffocating wave of insecurity crashed over Caroline, completely shattering the fragile peace she had just found.
Her CIA-trained mind rapidly analyzed the evidence. The worn edges of the photo indicated it had been held and looked at countless times.
She realized that Jarrod, a man who ruthlessly deleted all sentimentality from his life, was secretly holding onto a ghost.
The thought paralyzed her. Was she just a convenient replacement? A body to fill the void left by this mysterious Elena?
Her hands began to tremble. The overwhelming vulnerability she had shown him earlier now felt like a massive tactical error.
