Chapter 298:
He paced down the long corridor toward the family waiting room. His footsteps felt like lead. He dreaded the conversation he was about to have.
Back in the waiting room, Caroline heard the heavy footsteps approaching. She slowly raised her head from her knees.
Julian stepped into the doorway. He had removed his gown, but his light blue scrub top was heavily stained with her mother’s blood. His face was pale and deeply drawn.
The empty chairs around Caroline seemed to mock the sudden, profound silence. There was no one else left to receive the news, no buffer between her and the tragedy. Julian looked directly at Caroline. His eyes were wide with a devastating sorrow. His voice cracked slightly as he shook his head in a slow, definitive motion, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air. The finality of it crashed into the room, obliterating any lingering hope.
Caroline’s breath hitched, a sharp, ragged sound that tore through her throat. Her fingers went completely numb. The heavy encrypted phone slipped from her grasp and clattered loudly onto the linoleum tiles.

She looked at the dark blood staining Julian’s shirt. Her brain instantly registered the massive psychological trauma. It activated a deep, trained dissociation protocol to protect her sanity.
All the color drained from her face. Her expression wiped completely blank. Her features smoothed out, devoid of any tears, panic, or typical human grief.
She didn’t scream. She didn’t collapse. The absolute lack of reaction was far more terrifying than any outburst could have been. She walked toward Julian with an eerie, unnatural calmness, her posture perfectly straight.
The silence in the waiting room was absolute, a heavy, suffocating blanket that wrapped around Caroline’s shoulders. The tragedy felt entirely isolated, a private apocalypse that had instantly rewritten the foundation of her world. She stood perfectly still, a ghost trapped in the harsh fluorescent lighting.
Julian took a step toward Caroline. He reached out a hesitant hand to comfort her, his eyes filled with deep, overwhelming sorrow. He expected her to collapse under the crushing weight of the news.
Caroline neatly sidestepped his touch. Her movements were precise and mechanical, completely devoid of typical human hesitation or need for comfort.
She looked directly at Julian. Her voice was flat and perfectly modulated. She asked for the exact location of her mother’s body.
Julian frowned. He was deeply disturbed by her lack of emotion. He suggested she wait in the family room until the mortuary staff cleaned her up and prepared her for viewing.
Caroline ignored the suggestion entirely. She stepped around him and walked purposefully down the corridor. She headed straight toward the sub-basement elevators.
Julian quickly followed her. His medical concern mounted rapidly as he watched her rigid, almost military-like posture. She was walking like a soldier on a patrol route.
They stepped into the large freight elevator. They rode it down to the basement in complete silence. The low hum of the machinery amplified the heavy, suffocating tension between them.
