Chapter 198:
Inside the study, Finch remained completely unaware of the interruption in the hallway. His face was a mask of professional stoicism as he turned to the second half of the Spectre Advisory report.
His voice lost a fraction of its monotone flatness. He began to read the classified incident logs from the hospital shooting.
Finch detailed exactly how Caroline had reacted when the active shooter breached the ER. He described her terrifyingly low heart rate on the medical monitors, her calculated use of blind spots to evade a professional assassin, and her absolute, chilling lack of panic.
“In conclusion, sir,” Finch said, closing the file, “the subject exhibits psychological resilience and crisis-management skills that far exceed those of a civilian nurse. She is highly intelligent. Our financial audit confirms that aside from a single five-thousand-dollar transaction at a veterinary hospital — paid from Colonel Romero’s primary card for emergency surgery on an injured animal — she has not utilized the Colonel’s financial assets for any personal gain.”
General Augustus sat behind the massive mahogany desk, his gnarled fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic beat against the polished wood.
The old man’s cloudy eyes narrowed, flashing with a sharp, predatory intelligence.
Augustus had assumed Jarrod married a weak, easily manipulated pawn just to spite the family’s political alliances. But this report painted a different picture.

A woman who could stare down a gun barrel and survive. And when she finally did touch Jarrod’s money, it was not for diamonds or designer gowns — it was to save a dying stray. Augustus respected capability. But he respected principle even more.
Augustus closed his eyes for a long moment.
“I want to see her,” Augustus commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. “Set up a meeting for this weekend. I will test her myself.”
Finch bowed his head slightly and placed the heavy black folder directly in the center of the General’s desk.
Augustus grabbed his silver-eagle cane and pushed himself up from the leather chair, walking slowly out of the study. Finch followed closely behind.
The heavy oak doors clicked shut, but out of habit, the General did not lock them. His study was considered sacred ground; no one in the family would dare enter uninvited.
Hours passed. The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed 2:00 a.m.
The massive Romero estate was completely silent, bathed in the dim, yellow glow of the security wall sconces.
Harper slipped out of her bedroom suite, wearing a black silk nightgown. Her bare feet sank into the thick carpet, absorbing the sound of her footsteps. She moved like a ghost through the shadows.
She knew the general patrol routes of the night security team, but her execution was far from perfect. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, and her palms were slick with sweat. She pressed herself flat against the wall, slipping past the grand staircase. At one point, she nearly tripped over the edge of a Persian rug, freezing in absolute terror as a guard’s footsteps echoed down a nearby corridor. She held her breath until her lungs burned, only daring to creep toward the second-floor study once the heavy footsteps faded away.
