Chapter 470:
The kiss ended, but they didn’t part. He rested his forehead against hers, his breathing ragged, his eyes closed. The scent of him, dust, sweat, and something uniquely Jarrod, filled her senses, a grounding, intoxicating aroma. He could not lift his hand to her face the way he wanted to. His right arm remained locked against his chest, and his splinted left hand hung uselessly at his side. Instead, he lowered his head until his mouth hovered near hers, his breath brushing over her swollen lips like a touch.
“Next time,” he murmured, his voice a low, rough vibration, “there’s a fly buzzing around me, that’s what you do.”
The sheer, unadulterated arrogance of the statement made a laugh bubble up in her chest. She placed a careful palm against the uninjured side of his chest, avoiding the hard edge of the brace, and eased a few inches of space between them. “So, what you’re saying is, from now on, your problems are my problems to solve?”
He nodded, a look of perfect seriousness on his face. “You’re my wife. Clearing my perimeter is part of the job description.”
Caroline rolled her eyes, but a smile played on her lips. “Well, Miss Ashley Wright is more than just a fly. Evelyn told me she came to this disaster zone specifically for you.” She dropped the name deliberately, watching his face for a reaction.

The faint hint of a smile vanished from his eyes, replaced by a familiar coldness. “Who she is doesn’t matter. What matters is that she saw you. And she saw me.”
“Yes,” Caroline agreed. “She saw you publicly reject her. And then she saw you lose your temper at me.”
“She should have seen you defending your property,” Jarrod corrected, his voice flat.
This time, she shook her head, her expression turning serious. “Jarrod, you are not my property. You’re a person. I trust your judgment and your loyalty. I’m not going to treat you like a thing that needs to be guarded.”
Her words, so full of respect and unwavering faith, seemed to stun him. He stared at her, the possessive fire in his eyes dimming into confusion. This wasn’t the conversation he had expected. He had braced himself for an argument, for a negotiation of boundaries. Instead, she was offering him a level of trust he felt he didn’t deserve, a partnership that was deeper and more mature than the primal claiming he craved.
A warmth spread through his chest, but his insecurity still lingered. “That kind of thinking is dangerous,” he said, his voice quiet. “It makes me feel like you could let go at any time.”
Caroline stepped back into his space, rising on her toes again. She leaned in close, her lips brushing against his ear as she whispered, “I’m never letting go. But my confidence in us, that’s stronger than any public display of ownership could ever be.”
Her warm breath, the soft brush of her lips, and the absolute certainty in her voice combined to shatter the last of his defenses.
