Chapter 259:
She heard a faint, metallic scrape. It sounded like a heavy steel grate being lifted.
Caroline accelerated. She dropped her center of gravity and slid smoothly around the corner.
The hallway was completely empty.
At the very end of the corridor, a heavy steel fire door was slowly swinging shut on its hydraulic hinge. The latch hadn’t clicked yet.
Caroline sprinted silently down the hall. She grabbed the handle and pulled the door open just enough to look outside.
The door opened into a dark, narrow back alley. Massive green dumpsters lined the brick walls.

The man was gone. He had vanished into the labyrinth of Georgetown’s back streets.
Caroline cursed silently. She gritted her teeth. Her target was lost.
She knew pursuing a professional assassin into an unsecured urban environment without a weapon was suicide. Logic dictated immediate withdrawal.
She took a step back, preparing to let the fire door close.
A sharp, terrified scream echoed from the far end of the alley.
Caroline froze.
“Get your filthy hands off me!” a woman shrieked.
Caroline pressed her face against the cold glass of the door’s narrow window.
Under the sickly yellow glow of a streetlamp, three massive men wearing cheap leather jackets had cornered a woman against a brick wall.
Caroline squinted. Her eyes widened in shock.
The woman was Beatrice Hendon. The ultra-wealthy socialite who had viciously attacked Caroline at the pet store just days ago.
Beatrice wore a stunning, floor-length emerald evening gown. She clutched a trembling, medium-sized black dog — Doodles — tightly against her chest. The Cavapoo’s hind leg was still wrapped in a fresh white bandage, the surgical wound barely healed.
The leader of the thugs stepped forward. He was a mountain of a man with a thick, scarred neck. When he smiled, he revealed a rotting black tooth.
It was Rocco “Black-Tooth” Gallo, a notorious enforcer for the local crime syndicate.
Rocco flicked his wrist. A six-inch switchblade snapped open with a sharp click.
“Hand over the diamond necklace, princess,” Rocco growled, pointing the blade at Beatrice’s throat. “And maybe we won’t cut that ugly rat you’re holding.”
Beatrice was shaking violently, but her aristocratic arrogance held strong.
“If you touch me, the Hendon family will bury you alive!” Beatrice screamed.
The threat enraged Rocco.
He lunged forward. His massive hand grabbed a fistful of Beatrice’s blonde hair. He yanked her head back brutally, exposing her throat and the million-dollar diamonds.
Beatrice let out a piercing cry of pain.
One of the other thugs laughed. He reached out and tried to snatch the dog from her arms.
Doodles snapped its jaws, barking frantically.
The thug cursed. He raised his heavy, calloused hand and slapped the dog hard across the head.
The Cavapoo let out a sickening, high-pitched yelp of agony.
Behind the glass door, Caroline’s pupils dilated.
The sound of the dog screaming bypassed all of her logic. The primal, protective rage she had suppressed for months exploded in her chest.
She watched Rocco raise the switchblade to cut the necklace.
