Chapter 256:
“And my husband’s possessiveness is pathologically violent,” Caroline added, her tone dropping into a deadly serious whisper. “He is insanely jealous. I really don’t want him to break your hands over a stupid misunderstanding. You need those hands for surgery, don’t you?”
Evan’s fake smile completely vanished.
He stared at her. He expected a coy rejection or a slap. He did not expect the absolute, chilling certainty in her eyes. A cold shiver ran down his spine.
Up on the VIP mezzanine, Julian stood at the edge of the glass railing.
He was looking down at the bar. From his elevated angle, he couldn’t hear a single word.
All Julian saw was Evan Sadler leaning aggressively into Caroline’s personal space. He saw their shoulders touching. He saw Caroline leaning in to whisper something to Evan.
A massive, blinding wave of jealousy and panic exploded in Julian’s chest.
He could not lose her to a scumbag like Evan.
Julian spun around. He slammed his drink down on a cocktail table. The glass shattered, but he didn’t care. He stormed toward the stairs.
Brenna grabbed his arm.
“Julian! What the hell are you doing?” Brenna yelled.

“I’m not waiting anymore!” Julian shouted back, his face pale with desperation. “I’m getting her out of here right now!”
Down at the bar, Evan Sadler cleared his throat and awkwardly grabbed his scotch.
“Right. Just a joke, Thompson,” Evan muttered, trying to salvage his pride. “See you at work.”
He raised his glass in a stiff toast.
Caroline picked up her soda water and tapped it against his glass, establishing a firm, professional boundary.
Suddenly, a hand clamped down on Caroline’s wrist like a vice.
Caroline gasped, her drink splashing onto the counter.
She spun around. Julian was standing right behind her. He was breathing heavily. His eyes were wide, frantic, and filled with a desperate urgency.
He didn’t even look at Evan.
“Come with me,” Julian ordered. His voice was completely unrecognizable. “I have to tell you something right now.”
Caroline tried to yank her wrist back.
“Julian, let go! You’re hurting me. We can talk here,” Caroline protested.
Julian shook his head stubbornly and pulled her hard.
He dragged Caroline away from the bar, pulling her through a heavy black curtain and into a dark, narrow hallway at the back of the lounge.
Evan sat at the bar, watching them disappear. He took a sip of his scotch and smirked.
Julian shoved Caroline into the dim hallway.
He let go of her wrist but immediately blocked the narrow passage with his body. He wasn’t touching her, but he was trapping her all the same, his hands braced against the opposing walls, his shadow swallowing her completely.
The physical restriction instantly triggered Caroline’s unease. The posture was an uncomfortable echo of Jarrod’s dominance. Her lungs seized. Her heart hammered wildly.
Julian took a ragged breath. His eyes were red.
His hand shook violently as he reached into his blazer pocket. He pulled out the dark blue velvet box.
The back hallway smelled like stale beer and heavy bleach. A single, flickering yellow bulb cast long, distorted shadows across the brick walls.
Julian stood inches away from Caroline. His chest heaved with adrenaline.
