Chapter 249:
He shifted his weight. His left hand shot up, grabbing both of her wrists. He forced her arms above her head, pinning them to the mattress in a firm, unbreakable grip.
He pressed his left forearm across her pinned wrists. His left hand slid dangerously low, hooking the edge of her trousers. His right arm remained motionless, braced against the mattress.
Caroline’s eyes widened in real alarm. The final boundary was about to be crossed.
At that exact, razor-thin second, a sound exploded in the quiet bedroom.
It was a high-pitched, ear-piercing mechanical shriek — exactly like an incoming air-raid siren.
The noise violently shattered the heavy tension in the room.
It was the black military-encrypted satellite phone resting on the nightstand. That specific, bone-rattling ringtone meant only one thing.
It was a Code Red emergency from the Joint Special Operations Command.
Jarrod’s entire body went rigid. The heat in his black eyes fractured. A wave of pure irritation washed over his bruised face. The muscles in his jaw locked so tight they looked ready to snap.
He did not look at the phone.

He ground his teeth together. He lowered his head, his hot breath hitting her collarbone. He tried to block out the siren. He tried to finish undressing her.
Caroline felt the slight hesitation in his grip. She seized the microsecond of weakness.
She violently jerked her head to the side, dodging his mouth.
“Jarrod!” Caroline panted, her chest heaving. “That is a SOC red code!”
A low, furious curse ripped from Jarrod’s throat. The thick veins on his forehead bulged.
He was a tier-one commander. The military discipline wired into his brain overrode his primal instincts. He could not ignore a direct Pentagon directive. It was his absolute iron law.
With a heavy, agonizing groan, Jarrod released her wrists.
He rolled off her body and sat on the edge of the massive bed, his broad back facing her. He ran his left hand through his messy black hair, his right arm hanging motionless at his side, radiating a terrifying, frustrated energy.
Caroline scrambled backward instantly.
She shrank into the far corner of the mattress like a cornered cat. Her fingers shook violently as she fumbled to re-button her torn shirt. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Jarrod reached out and snatched the heavy black satellite phone.
He pressed the green button.
“Romero,” Jarrod barked. His voice was a block of solid ice. The thick want was instantly replaced by lethal focus.
A rapid, distorted voice spoke through the encrypted receiver.
Caroline watched Jarrod’s posture change. The frustrated lover vanished. The apex operator, the military commander, took his place. The temperature in the bedroom plummeted.
“Copy,” Jarrod said, using sharp, clipped military terminology. “Send the rally coordinates. I am moving.”
He ended the call and tossed the heavy phone back onto the nightstand.
Jarrod slowly turned his head. His dark, bottomless eyes locked onto Caroline. She was huddled in the corner, clutching her collar.
His chest rose and fell with heavy, measured breaths.
