Chapter 84:
Jarrod slowly opened his eyes. He looked down at her flushed, ruined face. A dark, incredibly satisfied smirk touched the corners of his mouth.
He reached up and gently wiped a drop of moisture from the corner of her lip with his thumb.
“That,” Jarrod whispered, his voice thick and raspy, “is intimacy. Do not ever lie to me about it again.”
Caroline’s face burned. She buried her face in the crook of his neck, too ashamed and too overwhelmed to look at him.
Jarrod let out a low, rumbling laugh. The vibration felt incredible against her cheek.
He gently grabbed her shoulders and pushed her upright, then pulled the lapels of her trench coat together, covering her up and restoring her dignity with surprising gentleness.

“Go inside, Caroline,” Jarrod ordered softly. “Get some sleep.”
Caroline didn’t argue. She scrambled off his lap, her legs shaking so badly she almost tripped over her own feet. She grabbed the door handle and shoved it open.
The freezing rain hit her face, shocking her back to reality.
She practically fell out of the SUV and sprinted toward the glass doors of her apartment building. She didn’t look back.
She ran up the stairs, unlocked her door, and slammed it shut behind her. She slid down the wood, sitting on the floor in the dark.
She pressed her hands to her burning cheeks. Her heart was pounding a frantic rhythm. She was completely, utterly terrified. Not of the assassins. Not of her cover blowing.
She was terrified because a part of her, a deep, traitorous part, had not only surrendered to him but had craved it. She had been trained to resist torture, to compartmentalize fear, but she didn’t know how to fight the terrifying, magnetic pull of her own body betraying her.
Down on the street, K.C. Bell watched Caroline disappear into the building. He put the Escalade in drive and pulled away from the curb, disappearing into the rainy night.
The harsh morning sunlight sliced through the gaps in the blinds, hitting Caroline directly in the eyes.
She groaned and rolled over. The digital clock on her nightstand read 7:00 AM. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the Washington sky a crisp, blinding blue.
Caroline dragged herself out of bed. She felt like she had been hit by a truck. Her lips were still tender and slightly swollen from the brutal, consuming kisses in the SUV.
She walked into the bathroom and splashed freezing water on her face, staring at the dark circles under her eyes. She had to get to the hospital. She had to face Melanie and Julian and the suffocating reality of her cover job.
She pulled on a pair of clean blue scrubs and grabbed her ID badge.
Just as she reached for the doorknob, the black satellite phone on the kitchen counter vibrated.
Caroline froze. She walked over and picked it up.
[Come downstairs. I am taking you home.]
Caroline frowned. Home? She was home. She needed to go to work.
