Chapter 197

Chapter 197:
Finch continued reading in his flat, emotionless tone. He detailed Caroline’s origins: born in a middle-class suburb in Virginia to parents who were currently drowning in a second mortgage.
The report stated that Caroline had graduated from a standard state university nursing program. She was currently employed as a junior ER nurse at Washington United Medical Center, earning a pathetic, entry-level salary.
Finch turned a page. He mentioned a recent, failed blind date Caroline had attended, and detailed her desperate, subservient attempts to keep her job after a disciplinary write-up.
Outside the door, a vicious, ugly smirk stretched across Harper’s face.
Her suspicions were perfectly confirmed. This woman wasn’t some hidden aristocrat. She wasn’t a secret billionaire heiress. She was a piece of absolute, bottom-feeding trash.
Harper’s mind spun wildly. She connected this pathetic résumé to Jarrod’s sudden, shocking marriage announcement at the gala.

In Harper’s arrogant, class-obsessed mind, there was only one logical explanation. Caroline had used her position as a nurse to get close to Jarrod when he was injured or visiting the hospital. She had trapped him. She had either gotten pregnant or found some disgusting piece of blackmail to force the marriage.
“Gold-digger,” Harper mouthed silently, her eyes burning with hatred.
The thought of this peasant woman getting her hands on the Romero family trust fund made Harper physically sick. If Caroline produced an heir, Harper’s own massive share of the inheritance would be severely diluted.
Inside the study, Finch turned to the next page of the report. Just as he was about to speak, a sharp clinking of porcelain echoed down the hallway.
A young maid carrying a silver tray with a midnight pot of tea was walking directly toward the study.
Harper cursed under her breath. If she was caught eavesdropping on the General, she would be severely punished.
She quickly pushed away from the door, grabbed her glass of water from the side table, and spun around, pretending to casually walk toward the maid.
“Watch where you’re going,” Harper snapped at the terrified girl, using her anger as a perfect cover.
Harper didn’t wait for an apology. She marched straight back to her luxurious bedroom suite, slammed the door, and locked the deadbolt.
She leaned her back against the heavy wood, her chest heaving with dark, malicious excitement.
She had the weapon she needed. She knew Caroline’s fatal flaw. She was a nobody — a fraud who had manipulated her way into the highest level of society.
Harper’s eyes darted around her lavish room. She could not let this garbage pollute the Romero bloodline. She would not let a nurse steal her money.
A toxic, brilliant plan formed in her mind. She needed to get her hands on that black folder. If she could photograph the documents and leak them to the Washington gossip columns, Caroline would be utterly destroyed. The social humiliation would force Jarrod to divorce her.
Harper smiled. She decided she was going to steal the file tonight.
