Chapter 113:
Caroline felt a wave of pure, burning humiliation wash over her. Jarrod was using their legal contract as a weapon to publicly brand her like cattle. Her chest heaved. She wanted to scream, but she couldn’t deny a federal legal document.
She bit her swollen lower lip, looked at Alston, and gave a single, miserable nod.
Alston physically recoiled. He suddenly realized he was standing in the middle of a Romero family war zone. He was a smart man. He knew when a case was unwinnable.
“I apologize for the intrusion, Colonel,” Alston said stiffly. He didn’t look at Caroline again. He turned around and practically sprinted out of the parlor, pulling the door shut behind him.
The moment the door clicked shut, the tension in the room exploded.
Caroline planted both hands squarely on Jarrod’s chest and shoved with all her operative strength.
Jarrod let her go. She stumbled backward, her chest heaving, her gray eyes blazing with absolute fury.
“Are you completely insane?” Caroline hissed, her voice shaking with rage. “He’s my friend! Why do you have to act like a rabid, possessive animal?”
Jarrod’s jaw locked. The veins in his neck bulged. He took a massive step forward, backing her up.
“I leave you alone for ten minutes to clear a path for your survival,” Jarrod roared, the volume of his voice shaking the crystal lamp. “And I come back to find you hiding in the shadows, smiling at another man!”

“We were talking!” Caroline yelled back, refusing to back down. “Your control issues are a psychological disease, Jarrod!”
Jarrod lunged forward. He grabbed her shoulders with his left hand, his right arm remaining still, spun her around, and pressed her back hard against the cold plaster wall next to the door, his forearm braced across her collarbone.
“Every single person in this estate wants to destroy you!” Jarrod snarled, his face inches from hers. “If they see you giving one ounce of attention to another man, they will use it to rip your reputation to shreds!”
“I am not your property!” Caroline screamed, her hands hitting his chest.
The violent physical struggle and the screaming rage suddenly morphed into something entirely different. The friction between their bodies ignited a massive, uncontrollable spark.
Jarrod’s eyes dropped to her lips. His breathing turned ragged.
He didn’t argue anymore. He pinned her wrists against the wall with his left forearm, his right arm still braced motionless at his side, and crashed his mouth violently down onto hers.
It wasn’t a kiss. It was a brutal, punishing claiming of territory. His lips crushed hers, forcing her mouth open. He tasted like dark anger and cedarwood.
Caroline let out a muffled cry. She tried to twist her head away, but his left hand released her wrists and tangled in her hair, holding her skull perfectly still. His body pressed her into the wall, every inch of him an immovable, unyielding force.
The sheer, overwhelming force of his dominance short-circuited her brain. The anger melted into a hot, heavy pool of liquid heat in her stomach. Her struggling stopped. Her body went completely limp against the wall, surrendering to the violent invasion.
