Chapter 386:
“No,” he breathed, shaking his head in automatic denial. “That’s not possible. I saw… I heard…”
“You saw what I wanted you to see,” she explained calmly, her voice taking on the dispassionate tone of a mission debriefing. “Melanie threatened to drag my father’s terminal medical records into the public eye to ruin his reputation—and mine—at the worst possible moment. I couldn’t let her destroy what little time he has left. I needed her gone. Immediately. Permanently. This was the fastest, most effective way to guarantee the outcome.”
She laid it all out for him—the cold, hard logic of her desperate act. She didn’t frame it as a moment of weakness, but as a calculated tactical decision.
Jarrod stared at her, his mind visibly struggling to recalibrate, to process this new, paradigm-shifting information. The scene in the locker room replayed in his head, but now with a different lens. Her scream. The fallen tray. Melanie’s confused terror. It all clicked into place. He remembered the strange, knowing look in Julian’s eyes. The doctor had suspected.
The shock on his face slowly melted away. It wasn’t replaced by anger at her deception. It was replaced by something far deeper, far more painful. A profound, soul-crushing heartache.
He looked at her, truly looked at her, and saw not a victim, but a survivor who had been pushed so far past her breaking point that she had been forced to turn her weapons on herself. To protect her family, she had hurt her own body.
His left hand, trembling slightly, rose to her bandaged arm. He didn’t touch it. His fingers hovered over the white gauze, a breath away, as if it were a sacred, fragile relic.
He said nothing. There were no words for this.

He lowered his head, his body folding over hers, and gently pressed his forehead against hers. His eyes were closed. His warm breath ghosted across her lips. In the quiet darkness of that small space between their faces, she could feel the tremors of his silent, shattering pain.
Jarrod stayed there for a long moment, his forehead pressed to hers, their breathing synchronized in the silent room. When he finally pulled back, his eyes were dark and deep, swirling with a storm of emotions she couldn’t decipher. He lifted a hand and brushed his thumb gently across her cheekbone.
“Do you think I’m a monster?” she whispered, the question fragile. She had confessed the what and the why of her plan, but she was terrified of his judgment. “Or just… crazy?”
He shook his head slowly, a muscle working in his jaw. His voice, when he spoke, was a low, gravelly rasp. “I think I’m a goddamn failure.”
The words stunned her.
“I failed,” he repeated, his voice thick with self-loathing. “I failed to build a world for you where you didn’t have to do this to yourself. I failed to be the man who could protect you from having to make that choice.”
