Chapter 248:
“Wait—” Caroline gasped, tearing her mouth away, her heart hammering in panic. “Thirty-day grace period!” she cried, shoving her palms frantically against his rigid chest. “You swore, Jarrod! This is not consent! You misunderstood!”
The words hit Jarrod like a physical blow. His body went rigid, his movements freezing for a split second. A look of raw, excruciating agony flashed in his eyes as his oath warred with his out-of-control desire. He let out a harsh, guttural sound — the sound of a man being torn apart from the inside.
“You started this,” Jarrod growled against her neck, his voice thick with frustration. “You kissed me first. The rules don’t apply when you’re the one breaking them!”
He bent his knees, slid his left arm under her thighs, and hoisted her entirely off the floor, bracing her weight against his shoulder and chest as his right arm hung motionless.
Caroline lost her balance. She cried out, her hands instinctively grabbing his shoulders to steady herself as her feet left the ground. She kicked out, trying to push away, but her legs were tangled with his powerful frame.
The incredibly intimate posture sent a violent shudder through Jarrod’s massive frame. He groaned, holding her tight against his chest, and began marching out of the kitchen toward the master bedroom.
“Put me down!” Caroline yelled, her face flushing bright red. “I just wanted to ask if I could go to the coffee shop tomorrow!”
Jarrod kicked the heavy bedroom door open with his boot. He let out a dark, wicked laugh that vibrated against her chest.
He walked to the edge of the bed and set her down onto the dark gray silk sheets.
He immediately followed her down, his heavy body caging her in. He braced his left hand beside her head, his right arm pressed motionless into the mattress as he stared down at her with eyes full of unmistakable hunger.
“You want coffee?” Jarrod rasped, his voice dripping with dark promise. “If you satisfy me tonight, I will buy the entire Starbucks franchise and put it in your living room.”

He didn’t wait for a response. He lowered his head, pressing his mouth to the sensitive skin of her neck, while his left hand moved to unbutton her clothes. The misunderstanding had ignited a fire that could no longer be put out.
Caroline was pinned flat against the dark gray silk sheets.
The heavy, suffocating weight of Jarrod’s body pressed down on her. His rough, calloused fingers moved with startling speed. He worked open the third button of her pristine silk shirt.
The cool air of the penthouse hit her exposed collarbones.
Jarrod let out a harsh, ragged breath. His lips trailed down her jawline, moving toward the sensitive skin of her neck. He was completely consumed, wanting to overwhelm her logic, her resistance, her entire attention.
“Stop!” Caroline gasped.
Her voice shook with genuine panic. Her lungs strained for air.
She slammed both hands flat against his chest and pushed with all her strength. It was like trying to move a concrete wall.
Jarrod completely ignored her protest.
