Chapter 491:
In that instant, a bond deeper than blood, forged in shared worry and genuine affection, solidified in her heart. In this vast, cold, powerful family, this man, this gruff, intimidating soldier, was the only one who truly, unconditionally, loved her.
All the walls she had built around herself since California, all the professional composure and practiced detachment, crumbled into dust.
She dropped her bag. It hit the marble floor with a soft thud.
Her eyes filled with tears. “Grandpa,” she whispered, the name choked with emotion.
She ran.
She closed the distance across the cavernous foyer in a few quick steps and threw herself into his arms.
The cane clattered to the floor, forgotten. Augustus Romero’s arms, strong and weathered from a lifetime of service, wrapped around her, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace. He held her as if she were the most precious thing in the world, his large hand patting her back in a steady, comforting rhythm.
The household staff, the butler, the footmen, the maids standing silently in the shadows of the hallways, all lowered their heads, hiding their shock. They had served this man for decades. They had seen him face down senators and foreign dignitaries. They had never, not once, seen him display such raw, unguarded emotion.
Caroline pulled back, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand. A wet, hiccuping laugh escaped her. “I’m sorry,” she said, her voice thick and nasal. “I got dust all over your suit.”
He waved a dismissive hand, his own eyes suspiciously bright. “Nonsense.” He turned his head, his voice booming with its usual authority, though it was a touch unsteady. “Agnes! Tea! And bring those little cakes she likes. Immediately!”
He looked back down at her, his expression softening. “You’re too thin,” he grumbled.

“You didn’t sleep,” she countered, her voice gentle as she pointed to the dark circles under his eyes. “You promised me you would.”
A faint blush rose on his weathered cheeks. “Old soldiers don’t need much sleep,” he huffed, trying to reclaim some of his authority. “Now, come. Sit down before you fall down.”
Seeing through his bluster, she broke into a real, watery smile. The fatigue seemed to melt from her face, replaced by a vibrant, loving warmth.
He offered her his arm. She took it immediately, her small hand resting in the crook of his elbow. She leaned her head against his shoulder for a moment as they began to walk slowly toward the living room.
“What’s your blood pressure been?” she asked, her voice slipping naturally into the cadence of a concerned nurse. “Have you been taking your medication on time?”
He grumbled a noncommittal answer, but he didn’t pull away. He felt the solid, real weight of her on his arm. A long, slow breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding for weeks finally escaped him. The profound, crushing loneliness that had been the silent occupant of this grand house for so long was, for tonight, banished.
Caroline guided the General to a massive, worn leather Chesterfield sofa that faced a crackling fireplace. She fluffed a needlepoint cushion and tucked it behind his lower back before sitting beside him.
