Chapter 310:
He ordered Riley to load her into the back of the Humvee. He keyed the radio on his shoulder strap, alerting base medical to prepare for an incoming civilian trauma.
Riley holstered his weapon. He lifted Caroline’s limp body from the mud. He was surprised by how incredibly light and fragile she felt in his arms.
He carefully placed her onto the cold metal bench in the back of the Humvee. He quickly ripped open a first-aid kit and wrapped a crinkling foil thermal blanket tightly around her shivering shoulders.
Hayes jumped back into the driver’s seat. He threw the Humvee into gear and sped toward the interior base gates, the tires kicking up gravel.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, the scene cut to an active, classified combat zone in the Middle East.
The interior of the enemy-held concrete bunker was filled with the acrid smell of cordite. The deafening crack of live ammunition echoed off the walls.
Colonel Jarrod Romero kicked down a reinforced wooden door. He moved with lethal, terrifying speed through the real-world hostile environment, smoke and dust choking the air.
He raised his rifle, bracing it against his left shoulder. His right arm remained motionless at his side, the field splint still visible beneath his torn combat shirt. He squeezed the trigger with mechanical precision, dropping two armed insurgents with flawless headshots. The recoil jolted through his left side, a brutal testament to the arm that should have been sharing the load.
His black tactical gear was soaked in sweat and streaks of enemy blood. His dark eyes burned with an intense, restless energy that he couldn’t seem to shake off.
Ever since he was deployed, a gnawing, physical sense of unease about Caroline had been eating at the back of his mind. It felt like a tight knot in his gut.
He cleared the final room with a chilling efficiency that bordered on inhuman, his movements so economical they seemed pre-programmed. The violence was over in seconds, but the absolute coldness in his eyes lingered, a clear sign of the storm raging beneath the surface.
The raid ended. The heavy silence of the desert night rushed back in, broken only by the groans of the wounded.
Jarrod lowered his rifle with his left hand. His chest heaved. He felt completely unsatisfied by the violence of the operation; it hadn’t burned off the anxiety.
K.C. Bell stepped into the cleared courtyard. He held a tactical datapad, waiting patiently for the Colonel to debrief.
Jarrod reached across his body with his left hand and ejected the empty magazine. The metal clattered onto the concrete floor. His mind drifted immediately back to the image of Caroline sleeping safely in his bed.
Back at the domestic relay base medical bay, the Humvee screeched to a halt outside the emergency entrance.
Riley and two medics rushed Caroline inside on a rolling stretcher. The bright fluorescent lights of the hallway assaulted her closed eyelids.
Jarrod wiped the sweat from his brow with his left hand in the bunker. He was completely unaware that his wife was currently bleeding on a stretcher half a world away.
