Chapter 347:
Without even looking, Caroline executed a perfect hip check, shoving the aide backward with terrifying force. It wasn’t a simple push; it was a calculated, hip-driven displacement of weight. The aide crashed into a wooden bench, the air knocked out of her lungs with a loud whoosh. She stared at Caroline with newfound, genuine terror.
Caroline pinned a whimpering Corbett against the lockers with one forearm pressed firmly across her throat, restricting her breathing just enough to cause panic but not unconsciousness.
She leaned in close, her face inches from Corbett’s, her voice a low, chilling whisper that cut through the stunned silence of the room.
“You ever mention my mother again,” she breathed, her voice colder than a morgue slab, “and I will end you.”
The threat was delivered with such cold, absolute conviction that no one in the room doubted for a second that she meant it.
The other nurses were frozen, caught between shock at Caroline’s ferocity and a secret, vicarious thrill at seeing the department’s new bully finally get her due. No one moved to help. No one called security. They just watched.
Corbett struggled, her hands scratching uselessly at Caroline’s arm. It was like clawing at granite. Caroline applied a fraction more pressure, and Corbett’s eyes bulged with fear.
Caroline’s gaze flicked over to the winded aide on the floor. “And you,” she said, her voice flat, “stay away from me.”
One of the nurses, Caroline’s friend Brenna O’Malley, finally broke the spell. She knew this had gone too far. This wasn’t a fight; it was an execution. She saw the dangerous, unhinged look in Caroline’s eyes, the same hollow emptiness she had worn ever since the funeral, and knew better than to intervene herself. Caroline wasn’t just angry. She was drowning, and Corbett had just kicked her in the face while she was gasping for air.

Brenna slipped out of the locker room and sprinted down the hall, her mind racing. She spotted Dr. Julian Croft at the nurses’ station, reviewing a patient chart.
She grabbed his arm, her voice urgent and breathless. “Julian, you have to come now. It’s Caroline. There’s a fight in the locker room. It’s bad.”
Julian’s head snapped up, his professional calm instantly replaced by alarm. He dropped the chart on the counter and followed Brenna at a near run toward the women’s locker room.
He knew that look Brenna was talking about. He had seen it before, in the operating room, when he had failed to save Caroline’s mother on that catastrophic afternoon. He had watched Caroline shut down in real time, her grief calcifying into something cold and impenetrable. If someone had pushed her to the edge again, he needed to get there now.
Back in the locker room, Caroline released Corbett, who slumped to the floor, coughing, sobbing, and gasping for air. Caroline stood over her, not with triumph, but with a cold, detached emptiness. The rage had burned out, leaving only ice.
The door to the locker room burst open. Julian Croft stood there, hesitating for a fraction of a second at the threshold of the female-only space before the urgency of the scene propelled him forward.
“Get in here!” Brenna urged.
