Chapter 135:
“I will have my assistant buy you a full wardrobe tomorrow morning,” Jarrod said, looking down at her burning red face. “For tonight, you can wear one of my shirts. It will be big enough to act as a dress.”
Before Caroline could object to the extreme intimacy of wearing his clothes, Jarrod turned and walked into the closet. He emerged ten seconds later holding a soft, dark blue button-down dress shirt.
He walked back to the bathroom door and held the shirt out to her with his left hand.
But as she reached out to take the shirt, desperate to escape his burning gaze, a sudden wave of dizziness hit her. Her heart was beating entirely too fast, and the suffocating tension in the room made her misjudge her footing.
She stumbled backward, her shoulder slamming hard against the wooden doorframe. She let out a muffled gasp as her body pitched backward, losing its balance entirely.
Jarrod dropped the shirt. His reflexes were instinctive and violent. His powerful left arm shot out like lightning, hooking around her waist to anchor her. He tried to bring his right arm up to assist, but the movement caused a sharp, audible hiss of pain to escape his teeth as the injured shoulder seized. Instead of a full embrace, he braced his weight against the doorframe, using his massive torso and his single functional arm to pin her securely against his chest before she could hit the floor.
Caroline’s brain short-circuited. The intense heat of his bare skin, the smell of pine, the absolute physical cage of his arm—it was too much. She scrambled frantically to push herself back, her hands sliding against the smooth, hot skin of his chest, mindful of the dark bruise near his shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” Caroline stammered, her voice shaking. “I slipped.”
Jarrod did not let her go immediately. He tightened the grip of his left arm, holding her firmly in place as he recovered from the jolt to his injury. He lowered his head until his lips brushed against the shell of her ear.
“If you wanted to get your hands on me, Caroline,” Jarrod whispered, his voice a dark, gravelly purr that sent a violent shiver straight down to her toes, “you didn’t have to throw yourself at the floor. You just had to ask.”

Caroline’s entire body burned with a humiliating, fiery heat. She shoved both of her hands hard against Jarrod’s bare chest, desperate to break the physical contact.
Jarrod let out a low, amused breath. He slowly uncoiled his arms from around her waist, allowing her to step back, but his dark gray eyes never left her flushed face.
He bent down, picked up the dark blue dress shirt from the floor, and held it out to her again.
“Careful,” Jarrod murmured, his voice laced with a heavy, lingering tension. “The floors are slippery.”
Caroline snatched the shirt from his hand. She didn’t say a word. She spun around, practically dove back into the bathroom, and slammed the door shut, throwing the deadbolt with a loud, echoing click.
