Chapter 509:
“They played their parts for the world,” Agnes continued, her voice a low, mournful hum. “The perfect, powerful Romero family. But in the master bedroom, the silence was a weapon. A cold war waged in whispers and averted eyes.”
Caroline clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She pictured a small boy, growing up in that chilling silence, learning from his first moments that love was a battlefield and a home was a place of pain.
The breaking point came when Jarrod was three.
“A terrible flu swept through the estate that winter,” Agnes recalled. “Jarrod developed a dangerously high fever. For three days and three nights, Isabella never left his side. She held him, bathed him in cool water, spooned broth into his mouth. She refused to sleep, refused to eat.”
On the fourth day, her body gave out.

“She collapsed. Right there, on the floor, beside his crib. The doctors were called. It was exhaustion, complicated by the flu she had undoubtedly caught from her son.”
Leland, for the first time in years, was shaken from his arrogant stupor. He saw his wife, pale and fragile, and a flicker of the old obsession, the desperate need to possess her, flared to life.
“He sat by her bedside,” Agnes said. “He held her hand. He tried to be the devoted husband, hoping that this show of concern might finally earn him a crumb of her affection.”
But it was in that dark, quiet room, in the dead of night, that his hope was not just extinguished, but annihilated.
“Isabella’s fever spiked. She fell into a deep, delirious sleep. She began to toss and turn, trapped in a nightmare.” Agnes’s voice dropped so low, Caroline had to lean in to hear. “And she began to talk.”
A knot of dread tightened in Caroline’s stomach. She knew what was coming.
“From her dry, cracked lips came a name. Over and over again. A desperate, heartbroken whisper.”
Agnes looked Caroline straight in the eye.
“It was not Leland’s name. It was the name of the professor. The man she had been forced to leave behind.”
The silence in the kitchen was absolute.
“Leland’s hand, the one holding hers, went rigid,” Agnes whispered, her own hand trembling at the memory. “I saw it. I was in the room, changing the compress on her forehead. I saw the look on his face. It was the death of a soul. All the pride, all the hope, all the possessive love, it shattered. In an instant.”
He dropped her hand as if it were a hot coal.
“He stood up, and without a word, he walked out of that room. He walked out of the master suite, out of this house, and out of her life. He never spent another night at the estate.”
A bitter, angry laugh escaped Caroline’s lips. “His love was that fragile?” she scoffed. “That selfish? A sick woman’s dream was enough to destroy it?”
“It was his pride that was destroyed,” Agnes corrected softly, a single tear tracing a path down her wrinkled cheek. “And a man like Leland Romero cannot live without his pride.”
