Chapter 279:
She pulled the annulment document from her bag and handed it to him as physical proof of the encounter.
Jarrod took the document. His fingers brushed against hers. He didn’t even look at the legal jargon; his eyes were locked entirely on her face.
“Why didn’t you take the million and run?” Jarrod asked, his voice dropping an octave. “Considering you hate being controlled by me.”
Caroline met his gaze steadily. Her expression was serious.
“While you might be a controlling jerk,” Caroline told him, “you are my controlling jerk. And I don’t run from fights.”
She added, her voice fierce, “More importantly, I refuse to let people like Cornelia dictate my worth or my choices with dirty money.”
The absolute honesty and fierce loyalty in her words hit Jarrod like a physical blow. It shattered the last remnants of his deep-seated insecurities.
He suddenly reached across the seat. He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her across the console until she was straddling his lap.
Caroline gasped at the sudden movement. Her hands instinctively grabbed his broad shoulders to steady herself.
Jarrod buried his face in the crook of her neck. He inhaled her scent deeply, letting out a ragged sigh of pure, unadulterated relief and possessive triumph.
“You are the most terrifying, magnificent creature I have ever met,” Jarrod murmured against her pulse, kissing the sensitive skin beneath her jaw.

Caroline shivered. The raw emotion in his voice stripped away her own defenses. She wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him tight.
The armored SUV rolled smoothly through the D.C. traffic. The privacy partition was up, isolating them in a bubble of absolute, newly forged trust.
Jarrod slowly pulled back from the crook of Caroline’s neck. His dark eyes locked onto hers, blazing with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
He lifted his left hand. His rough thumb traced the line of her jaw. His touch was surprisingly gentle given the lethal violence he was capable of, his right arm remaining carefully braced and immobile against his side.
“I have never trusted anyone in my entire life,” Jarrod told her, his voice low and vibrating with absolute certainty, “the way I trust you in this moment.”
Coming from a black-ops commander who lived in a world of betrayal and paranoia, this admission was heavier than any declaration of love.
Caroline’s heart swelled. She rested her hand over his on her cheek, leaning into his touch, fully accepting the weight of his trust.
But the tender moment was swiftly overtaken by Jarrod’s innate, tyrannical need to protect what was his.
His expression hardened. With his left hand, he plucked the annulment document from the seat and folded it sharply over his knee, then used his teeth and one-handed leverage against the edge of the seat to tear it effectively into pieces, letting the debris fall onto the floorboard.
“New rule,” Jarrod issued a non-negotiable command. “You are never, under any circumstances, to meet with Cornelia or any Romero family member alone again.”
