Chapter 255:
He looked at the empty space between them. A flash of profound, raw hurt crossed his eyes. He slowly pulled back, his shoulders slumping.
He reached his hand into his blazer pocket. His fingers nervously traced the square outline of a small velvet box. He took a deep breath. He had to do this tonight.
Caroline saw his hand hovering over his pocket.
Her chest tightened with absolute dread. She knew exactly what that look meant. She had to get out of this booth before he made a terrible mistake.
Caroline stood up abruptly.
“It’s too loud over here,” Caroline shouted over the bass. “I’m going to get a water at the bar.”
She didn’t wait for a response. She turned and walked away, leaving the suffocating safety of the VIP booth behind.

Caroline pushed her way through the dense, sweating crowd on the dance floor.
She finally reached the massive, circular bar at the back of the lounge. The air here was slightly cooler. She climbed onto an empty leather barstool and signaled the bartender.
“Soda water. Extra ice,” Caroline ordered.
She rested her elbows on the sticky mahogany counter. She watched the ice cubes clink against the glass, trying to flush the toxic energy of the VIP booth out of her system.
A heavy wave of expensive, overpowering cologne suddenly assaulted her nose.
A man in a sharp, silver-gray tailored suit slid onto the empty stool directly to her right. He leaned heavily against the bar, invading her personal space.
It was Dr. Evan Sadler. He was the youngest attending plastic surgeon at Washington United, and the most notorious playboy on the payroll.
Evan turned his head. His eyes slowly dragged down the line of Caroline’s neck, lingering on the zipper of her leather jacket. His gaze was predatory and slick.
“You know, Thompson,” Evan said, flashing a bright, practiced smile, “I always thought the ponytail was a tragedy. But tonight? It works for you.”
Caroline’s jaw tightened.
She did not look at him. She kept her eyes locked on her glass.
“Thank you, Dr. Sadler,” Caroline replied. Her voice was a flat, dead line.
Evan chuckled and slid his glass of scotch closer to hers.
“Don’t let Evans and those old hags ruin your night,” Evan murmured, dropping his voice into a faux-intimate register. “They’re just jealous. But listen… if the rumors are true, and you’re looking for a sponsor with actual influence?”
Evan leaned in, his shoulder brushing against hers.
“I can make your life at the hospital very, very easy,” Evan offered.
A wave of pure nausea hit Caroline’s stomach.
The sheer arrogance of the man, treating her like a commodity to be purchased, made her blood run cold.
Caroline turned her head and locked her freezing gray eyes directly onto Evan’s face.
“Dr. Sadler, I appreciate the offer,” Caroline stated. Her voice was crystal clear, cutting right through the heavy bass of the club. “But I am already married.”
Evan raised an eyebrow, clearly not believing her.
Caroline leaned in slightly.
