Chapter 150:
Mrs. Thompson turned around. She didn’t scowl. She rushed forward with a bright, entirely fake smile.
“Caroline, honestly!” Mrs. Thompson scolded, though her tone was giddy. “You are a married woman now! You can’t leave all your junk cluttering up your old bedroom. Jarrod was so thoughtful to send a professional crew over to help us pack.”
Caroline’s lungs stopped working. The blood drained completely from her face.
Before she could process the betrayal, the heavy front door clicked shut behind her.

Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor.
Caroline spun around.
Jarrod walked into the living room. He had taken off his military jacket. He was wearing just his crisp shirt and tie. The cold, icy bastard from the SUV was completely gone.
He wore a warm, charming, utterly flawless smile. He looked like the perfect, respectful son-in-law.
He walked straight up to Caroline. His large arm wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his side in a display of absolute possession.
“I apologize for the delay, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson,” Jarrod said smoothly, his voice dripping with polite charm. “I had to take a secure call in the vehicle. Thank you for helping Caroline pack her final belongings.”
Mr. Thompson waved his hand eagerly, stepping forward to offer Jarrod the bourbon. “Nonsense, Jarrod! You are protecting the country. Packing a few boxes is the least we can do.”
Caroline stood frozen against Jarrod’s side. She felt the iron grip of his fingers digging into her hip. Her entire body trembled with pure, unadulterated rage.
She leaned her head back slightly. She lowered her voice to a lethal, venomous whisper that only he could hear.
“What the hell did you do?” Caroline hissed.
Jarrod tilted his head down. His lips brushed against her ear in what looked like a tender, husbandly gesture.
“I came to collect my wife,” Jarrod whispered back, his voice a dark, vibrating threat. “And to remove every single reason you have to ever come back here.”
Caroline shoved her hands against his chest, trying to break his grip. “I am not moving out! I didn’t agree to this!”
Mrs. Thompson’s fake smile vanished. She glared at Caroline. “Stop acting like a spoiled child! You are married to a Romero. You belong in your husband’s house. Do not embarrass us!”
Caroline stared at her mother. She looked at her father, who was busy clinking glasses with Jarrod. They had completely sold her out for the proximity to wealth and power.
Jarrod smiled down at Caroline. His gray eyes were dark and triumphant. He had trapped her perfectly, using the very family she was trying to protect to lock her in his cage.
The dining room chandelier cast a warm, golden glow over the heavy oak table.
For Caroline, the dinner felt like an active torture session.
