Chapter 27:
Caroline’s heart hammered wildly, but her stubborn pride refused to break. She glared back at him, her chest heaving. “Aren’t we? We know absolutely nothing about each other except what’s printed on that piece of paper.”
Jarrod’s gaze dropped to her lips. His eyes darkened to the color of a storm cloud.
“You’re about to find out,” he murmured.
Before Caroline could process the threat, Jarrod crowded her against the coffee table. He braced his left hand on the back of the sofa, trapping her, and leaned down until his face was inches from hers. He didn’t touch her, but the sheer heat and power radiating from his body pinned her more effectively than any physical hold.
Caroline let out a short, panicked gasp. Her feet were on the floor, but she felt completely unmoored. Her hands flew up, pressing against the solid wall of his chest as if to hold him at bay.
Jarrod pivoted smoothly. He sat down on the plush cushions of the wide sofa, his left hand shooting out to grab her wrist, pulling her down with him.
She landed squarely on his lap, half-sprawled across his hard thighs. The position was devastatingly intimate. Her hip was pressed against his, her core braced against his powerful legs.

A violent flush of heat exploded across Caroline’s entire body. Her face burned so hot she thought she might catch fire.
“Let me go!” she hissed, her hands pushing frantically against his solid chest, trying to scramble off him.
Jarrod’s left arm wrapped around her waist like an iron band. He clamped her down against his lap, locking her in place. He was injured, but his strength was still absolute.
He leaned forward, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
“Tell me, Mrs. Romero,” he whispered, his hot breath ghosting over her sensitive skin, sending a violent shudder down her spine. “Do strangers hold you like this?”
Caroline gasped, her fingers curling into his coat. The tension in the room was suffocating. Her defenses were melting under the sheer, overwhelming heat of his body and the intoxicating scent of his skin.
Creak.
The door leading to the dining room suddenly swung open.
Mrs. Thompson stepped out, holding a polished silver tray, a triumphant smile on her face. “I finally got the tarnish off! It was hiding under the—”
She stopped dead.
She looked at the sofa. She saw her daughter sprawled across the billionaire Colonel’s lap, their bodies tangled together in a position that left absolutely nothing to the imagination.
Mrs. Thompson let out a loud gasp. “Oh my heavens!”
She slapped her free hand over her eyes, but she spread her fingers wide apart, blatantly staring through the gaps.
“I saw nothing!” Mrs. Thompson squeaked, her face turning bright red. “You two just… carry on! Take your time!”
She spun around with surprising agility, practically diving back into the dining room, and slammed the heavy wooden door shut with a resounding bang.
The heavy thud of the dining room door slamming shut echoed through the quiet living room, leaving a ringing silence in its wake.
