Chapter 500:
“You see!” she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Caroline. “That’s what she does! She plays the victim, the poor little orphan nurse, and she twists you around her little finger! She’s a manipulative, social-climbing witch!”
The General rose slowly to his feet. The temperature in the room dropped twenty degrees. When he spoke, his voice was not a shout. It was a low, terrifying roar, the sound of a lion whose territory had been invaded.
“GET. OUT.”
Cornelia flinched as if struck. Her face went white with terror. She grabbed Harper’s arm, trying to pull her back, to silence her. “Harper, apologize to your grandfather! Now!”
But Harper was beyond reason. She shook off her mother’s hand. “Why should I?” she screamed, her voice cracking with hysterical tears. “Why do you love her more than me? I’m your blood! She’s nothing!”
The General didn’t even bother to answer. He gave a sharp, almost imperceptible nod to Agnes.

Instantly, two large men in dark suits materialized at the dining room entrance. They were part of the estate’s security detail, their faces impassive, their movements silent and efficient.
They moved on Harper and Cornelia, their presence an undeniable wall of force.
“You can’t do this!” Cornelia hissed, trying to maintain a shred of dignity as one of the men took her arm in a firm, inescapable grip.
Harper fought, kicking and screaming like a spoiled child. “Let go of me! Grandpa, make them stop!”
They were half-dragged, half-escorted from the room, their protests echoing down the long hallway before being cut off by the sound of a closing door.
The General sat back down in his chair, his breathing heavy. He looked at Agnes. “Confine them to their wing for one week. All credit cards and privileges are suspended. No visitors. No exceptions.”
Just before she was pulled from view, Cornelia twisted her head around and fixed Caroline with a look of pure, murderous hatred. It was a promise of future vengeance. Then she was gone.
The dining room was silent again, the storm having passed as quickly as it had arrived.
The silence that descended upon the dining room was absolute, broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall. The violent energy of the confrontation had been sucked out of the room, leaving a strange, clean calm in its wake.
Caroline looked at the General. His chest was still rising and falling heavily, and a faint tremor of residual anger shook the hand resting on the table.
“General,” she said softly, a knot of worry in her stomach. “Was that… necessary? To be so harsh? They are your family.”
He picked up his water glass and took a long, slow sip. He set it down with a precise click. His eyes, when they met hers, were ancient and filled with a grim wisdom.
“A good gardener, my dear,” he said, his voice low and gravelly, “knows that you cannot simply trim the weeds. If you want the roses to flourish, you must pull the poison ivy out by the root.”
