Chapter 296:
Julian walked out of the bay. His pristine white coat was now stained with fresh blood. His expression was grim and deeply serious.
He approached Caroline in the waiting room. He crouched down in front of her to meet her eye level.
He delivered the devastating news. The internal damage was catastrophic. Her mother’s aorta was likely ruptured.
Julian explained that Dr. Holloway was hesitant to operate. The survival rate was less than five percent, making the surgery almost futile.
Caroline let out a gut-wrenching sob. She collapsed into the stiff waiting room chair, the horrific reality crushing the air from her lungs. The nurses who had gathered nearby offered sympathetic glances but kept their distance, leaving Caroline to face the horrific decision alone.
Julian looked at Caroline. His voice was rough with raw emotion. He offered to pull rank and take over the surgery himself if she authorized it.

He warned her brutally. He would have to crack her mother’s chest open immediately, and she might die on the table within minutes.
Caroline looked into Julian’s eyes. She didn’t see the man who had just wrongly accused her. She saw the brilliant, capable surgeon she once deeply respected.
She nodded sharply. Her voice was completely hollow. She told him to do whatever it took to save her.
A nurse shoved a clipboard into Caroline’s hands. It held the high-risk emergency surgical consent forms.
Caroline stared at the dense legal jargon. The black letters swam in her blurry vision. The physical weight of the pen felt like a thousand pounds.
She signed her name with a violently trembling hand. She officially authorized the desperate, last-ditch attempt on her mother’s life.
Julian took the clipboard. He gave her one last reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. He sprinted back toward the OR doors.
Caroline slid slowly down the cold hospital wall until she hit the floor. She pulled her knees tightly to her chest, completely shattered.
In her absolute despair, she pulled out the encrypted satellite phone. She stared at the silent device. She desperately, agonizingly wished Jarrod was there to hold her.
Caroline sat on the cold linoleum floor of the family waiting room. She pulled her knees tightly to her chest. The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting long, sterile shadows across the empty chairs.
She stared blankly at the encrypted military satellite phone in her hand. The heavy black device remained completely dark. It was silent. She pressed her thumb against the cold screen, praying for the sudden, piercing shriek of the incoming call alarm.
Nothing happened. The absolute silence from the device pressed down on her chest, making it difficult to draw a full breath.
Down the long, sterile hospital corridor, the swinging double doors of Operating Room 3 banged open and shut as nurses rushed in with fresh supplies. The heavy doors offered only brief, terrifying glimpses into the chaotic environment of the OR before sealing shut again.
