Chapter 355:
“This is my contact information,” he said, his voice heavy. “If you ever want to talk—if you ever need anything at all—I want you to call me.”
Caroline didn’t even glance at it. She stared right through it, as if it were a piece of trash.
With a sigh of defeat, Donovan placed the card on the porch railing. He gave her one last, long look. “I’ll be here, Caroline. Whenever you’re ready.”
Then he turned and walked away, his shoulders heavy. The door of the black Lincoln Navigator opened and closed. The engine started with a low, powerful hum, and the vehicle pulled away from the curb, disappearing down the street, taking the suffocating tension with it.
The moment the SUV was out of sight, Caroline’s strength gave out completely. She sank onto the porch steps, her legs unable to hold her any longer. A gut-wrenching sob tore from her throat, and she buried her face in her hands, her body wracked with silent, agonizing tears.

The house was utterly still behind her—the house her father had filled with love, the house her mother had filled with secrets. She was completely, utterly alone with the shattered pieces of her identity.
The only sound was the slow, rhythmic tick-tock of the grandfather clock in the hall. Each tick was a hammer blow, marking the seconds of a new, fractured reality. Caroline sat on the porch steps for a long time, her body numb, her mind a storm of grief and confusion.
Finally, the cold evening air forced her inside. She walked through the front door and stood in the hallway, looking at the familiar space as if seeing it for the first time. The worn rug. The family photos on the wall. Her father’s favorite armchair, still holding the shape of him.
Her mother had taken this secret to her grave.
Caroline walked into the living room and sank into the corner of the sofa, pulling her knees to her chest. She wrapped her arms around them, a small, tight ball of misery, using her silence as both a shield and a weapon against a world that had suddenly become unrecognizable.
She thought about her mother—Vivian, with her gentle smile and her endless patience. Caroline had nursed her through her final months, had held her hand as she slipped away. And through all of it, through every moment of pain and fear and goodbye, her mother had never spoken a word of this. Had never mentioned Donovan Sinclair. Had never hinted that the man Caroline called “Dad” was not her biological father.
Had her mother ever planned to tell her? Or had she intended to take this secret to her grave, leaving Caroline to discover it like this—from a stranger on her doorstep?
The questions circled in her mind, each one a fresh twist of the knife. The beautiful, happy family she remembered—was any of it real? Her father’s love, her mother’s devotion, the childhood she had cherished—was it all built on a lie?
But then another thought surfaced, cutting through the storm of betrayal. Her father. Walter Thompson. He had known. He must have known.
