Chapter 46:
He reached out and grabbed the edge of the quilt she was clutching. With a sudden, powerful jerk, he pulled it out of her hands and tossed it onto the floor.
Caroline gasped, suddenly feeling completely exposed in her thin pajamas. “What are you doing?”
“If it was just a reflex,” Jarrod murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips, “then why are you trembling right now?”
He shifted his weight, moving closer.
Caroline’s breath hitched. She pressed herself harder against the headboard, but there was nowhere left to retreat. “Stop it. You’re invading my space again. Just like you did when you ruined my first kiss.”
Jarrod stopped. He tilted his head, a dark smirk touching his lips.

“Ruined it?” he asked, his voice a low, dangerous purr. “Or finished what you started? You were the one who crashed into me on that sofa, Caroline. I simply took what was offered.”
Caroline’s brain short-circuited. The memory of that mortifying, accidental kiss—and how he had brutally taken control of it—flooded her mind.
The embarrassment mutated instantly into hot, blinding anger.
“You arrogant bastard!” she hissed. She grabbed the spare pillow next to her and swung it hard, smacking him squarely in the chest. “Get out of my room! Right now!”
She raised the pillow to hit him again.
Jarrod’s reflexes snapped.
His left hand shot out, catching her wrist mid-swing. He didn’t just stop her; he used her momentum against her.
With a swift, powerful motion, Jarrod twisted his body and lunged forward.
Caroline let out a sharp cry as he forced her backward. Her shoulders hit the mattress hard.
Before she could react, Jarrod was over her. He planted his left knee on the mattress beside her hip and braced his left hand on the headboard right next to her head.
He had her completely trapped beneath him.
The air in the room instantly evaporated. The playful banter was gone. Jarrod looked down at her, his gray eyes blazing with a raw, unmasked hunger that made Caroline’s stomach clench violently.
“The men in my family,” Jarrod growled, his face inches from hers, “do not take orders to leave. Especially not from their wives.”
Caroline’s lips parted to argue, but the words never came.
Jarrod lowered his head and captured her mouth.
It wasn’t an accident this time. It was a deliberate, punishing, and utterly consuming invasion.
His lips were hard and demanding, forcing hers apart. He tasted like mint and dark, dangerous intent. The sheer force of the kiss pushed Caroline deeper into the mattress.
Her hands, which had been trapped between them, instinctively curled into fists against his chest. She tried to push him away, but he was immovable.
The heat radiating from his body seeped into her pores. The scent of him overwhelmed her senses. The aggressive, possessive rhythm of his mouth against hers sent a shockwave of pure, liquid heat straight to her core.
Her fists slowly uncurled. Her fingers tangled in the crisp fabric of his shirt. Without realizing it, she let out a soft, helpless whimper into his mouth and kissed him back.
