Chapter 304:
She transferred two million dollars into a holding account. She set a strict twenty-four-hour delay on the final wire transfer to Vinnie’s account.
She then pulled out a second, older burner phone from a hidden desk drawer. She dialed a number she hadn’t used in over a decade.
She contacted a high-level syndicate cleaner, a professional whose sole job was to tie up loose ends and erase liabilities.
Cornelia ordered a hit on Vinnie. She instructed the cleaner to intercept him at the private airfield in Maryland before his plane left the country.
She promised the cleaner half a million dollars for Vinnie’s head. Her voice was cold, precise, and utterly devoid of mercy.
Back in Alexandria, Caroline finished the final call with the florist. She closed the laptop with a sharp, definitive snap.
She walked past Julian without a word. She headed up the wooden stairs to her mother’s home office to search for her life insurance documents.
Julian followed her to the bottom of the stairs. He pleaded with her to stop acting like a robot. He begged her to let him help her carry the burden.

Caroline stopped on the landing. She turned around. Her eyes flashed with a sudden, intense exhaustion that cut through her blank facade.
She told Julian that she was profoundly grateful for everything he had done to try to save her mother. She stated clearly, however, that his constant hovering was overwhelming her already fractured mind. “You need to leave,” she said, her voice low but laced with steel. “My husband… he wouldn’t want you here.”
The harsh truth hit Julian like a physical blow to the chest. He took a step back, his face falling in complete defeat.
Caroline turned and walked into the office. She shut the heavy oak door firmly behind her, locking Julian out.
Inside the office, the faint scent of her mother’s vanilla perfume lingered in the stale air. It hit her senses instantly.
Caroline leaned her back against the closed door. Her chest heaved. The cold facade cracked for just a second, a sharp pain shooting through her ribs.
She pulled out the encrypted satellite phone again. She gripped the black plastic so tightly her knuckles turned stark white.
She desperately needed the absolute, terrifying safety of Jarrod’s world. She needed a place where no one could hurt her, where the walls were bulletproof.
She realized she could not stay in this house of ghosts. She couldn’t stay surrounded by people who didn’t understand the violent reality she now lived in.
A dangerous plan began to form in her mind. She was going to find Jarrod herself, no matter the cost or the distance.
She looked out the office window at the darkening sky. She watched the heavy storm clouds gather over the city, preparing for the deluge.
Heavy rain began to batter the windows of the Thompson residence as evening set in. The wind howled around the eaves, rattling the old wooden frames.
