Chapter 374:
“I’m trying to calm him down,” Brenna sobbed. “The nurses are here, but he’s not listening to anyone. He’s packing his things.”
Caroline’s mind went terrifyingly clear. The questions about Jarrod, the secrets of this house—they all evaporated. There was only one thing that mattered.
She hung up the phone without saying goodbye. She turned to K.C., who had heard everything, his face a mask of shock and concern.
Her voice was no longer pleading or questioning. It was a command, sharp and cold and absolute.
“Take me back to the hospital. Now.”
K.C. didn’t hesitate. He nodded once, a sharp, decisive movement. “Yes, ma’am.”
They ran. Out the massive front door, across the pristine driveway, and back into the black SUV that was still idling. The engine roared to life as K.C. threw it into reverse, spinning the wheel. The tires squealed on the pavement as he accelerated away from the estate, leaving a trail of disturbed gravel in their wake.

Inside the car, Caroline’s hands were clenched into fists so tight her nails dug into her palms, drawing blood. The pain was a distant, welcome anchor. All she could see was Melanie’s smug face. All she could feel was a burning, all-consuming need for revenge.
“Faster,” she said, her voice a low growl.
The city flew by in a blur of concrete and glass. Every red light was a personal insult, every slow-moving car an obstacle to be overcome. She was suffocating on a toxic cocktail of fear, guilt, and hatred. She imagined Donovan’s face, twisted in the agony of discovering his own terminal diagnosis, and a fresh wave of agony washed over her.
When the SUV screeched to a halt in the ambulance bay of the hospital, Caroline didn’t wait for K.C. to open the door. She threw it open herself and sprinted toward the entrance, her heart pounding a frantic, desperate rhythm against her ribs.
Caroline burst through the automatic doors of the hospital, ignoring the startled looks from the people in the lobby. She didn’t wait for the elevator, its slow ascent an unbearable thought. She shoved open the door to the stairwell and took the stairs two at a time, her breath burning in her lungs, her leg muscles screaming in protest.
K.C. was right behind her, his long strides easily keeping pace, a silent, imposing shadow.
She reached the fifth floor and pushed through the fire door, her chest heaving. She ran down the hallway toward Donovan’s room, her sneakers squeaking on the polished floor. But as she rounded the final corner, she skidded to a stop.
There was a small crowd gathered outside Room 514. She saw Brenna, her face pale and tear-streaked. She saw Dr. Julian Croft, his expression a mixture of professional concern and personal distress.
Caroline pushed her way through the onlookers, a cold dread icing her veins.
