Chapter 89:
She glared at him. Her voice shook. “This is a massive violation of boundaries. You are harassing me.”
Jarrod leaned back against the leather seat, crossing his arms over his broad chest. He looked completely relaxed and entirely unapologetic.
“This is not a workplace, Caroline,” Jarrod corrected her smoothly. “This is a legal sharing of assets between a husband and wife.”
Caroline opened her mouth, but no words came out. His absolute shamelessness completely paralyzed her brain. She spun her head around and glared out the window, her chest tight with anger.

But her throat was burning. The thirst was unbearable.
She kept her eyes on the window. Her fingers slowly twisted the plastic lid of the coffee cup, rotating the sip hole exactly ninety degrees away from where his mouth had been. She lifted the cup and took a long drink.
Jarrod watched her subtle movement. A dark, victorious smile spread across his lips. He didn’t say a word. He let her keep her tiny illusion of control.
The heavy tension in the car slowly melted. It morphed into a thick, suffocating heat. The shared food created a strange, invisible wire pulling them closer together.
The SUV turned a sharp corner. The massive white building of the Washington United Medical Center suddenly loomed in the windshield.
Caroline stared through the dark, bulletproof glass. The hospital’s main entrance was packed. Doctors in white coats and nurses in blue scrubs hurried across the concrete pavement. Two bright red ambulances were parked near the emergency doors.
She jerked upright and slammed the half-empty coffee cup into the center console holder.
“Pull over,” Caroline said quickly, her voice tight with panic. “Pull over right here.”
In the driver’s seat, K.C. Bell glanced at the rearview mirror, then at Jarrod. He didn’t touch the brakes. The massive SUV continued rolling smoothly down the street.
Caroline turned her body toward Jarrod, gripping the edge of the leather seat.
“Please, Jarrod,” she begged, her words rushing out. “Drop me off here. It’s only three blocks away. I can walk.”
The dark amusement completely vanished from Jarrod’s face. His jaw locked. A cold, heavy anger settled in his gray eyes.
“Why are you trying to sneak out of my car like a thief?” Jarrod demanded. His voice was a harsh whip crack in the quiet cabin.
Caroline’s brain spun. She needed a logical, bulletproof excuse.
“This vehicle is a massive target,” Caroline explained rapidly. “It has military plates. If my coworkers see me getting out of an armored tank, my entire low-profile cover is destroyed.”
Jarrod let out a low, mocking scoff. His eyes narrowed, cutting straight through her lie.
“You don’t care about your cover,” Jarrod stated coldly. “You’re terrified of them finding out that you’re married to me.”
Caroline’s heart skipped a violent beat. A cold sweat broke out on the back of her neck. She quickly looked down at her lap, unable to maintain eye contact.
