Chapter 99:
“You are a liar!” Melanie shrieked.
In her blind rage, Melanie threw her arms out to point at Caroline. Her right arm, the supposedly crippled, severely injured arm, shot out of the sling and waved wildly in the air with perfect, fluid mobility.
The office plunged into a dead, suffocating silence.
Melanie froze. She stared at her own extended right arm. Her mouth hung open.
Caroline let out a loud, mocking scoff. “A medical miracle. Right here in the administrative office.”
Dr. Cromwell’s face turned dark purple. The veins in his neck bulged. He realized he had been played for an absolute fool.
He slammed both fists onto the mahogany desk. The massive boom made Tammy scream and collapse onto the floor.
“Take that damn sling off right now, Melanie!” Dr. Cromwell roared. His voice shook the windows. “Or I will call the police and have you arrested for medical fraud and obstruction of justice!”
Melanie’s entire body shook. She slowly reached up with her left hand and pulled the Velcro strap. The white sling fell to the floor.
Her right arm was perfectly fine. There was no swelling. There was no bruising.

Melanie’s knees buckled. She collapsed into the chair, buried her face in her hands, and started sobbing uncontrollably. The lie was dead.
Dr. Cromwell rubbed his temples. A massive headache throbbed behind his eyes. He looked at the two women crying in his office with absolute, unfiltered disgust.
“This is the most appalling display of workplace sabotage I have ever seen in my career,” Dr. Cromwell growled. “You falsified a medical injury to destroy a colleague’s life.”
Melanie dropped to her knees. She reached out, trying to grab the edge of Dr. Cromwell’s white coat.
“Please, Dr. Cromwell!” Melanie sobbed, her voice cracking with desperation. “I was just angry! I made a mistake! Please don’t fire me!”
Dr. Cromwell took a sharp step back, avoiding her hands. He looked down at her coldly.
“This is way beyond my personal forgiveness, Melanie,” he stated flatly.
He turned around, picked up the heavy black phone on his desk, and punched in a four-digit extension.
“Get me the Director of Human Resources,” Dr. Cromwell ordered into the receiver. “I have a code of conduct violation. Falsifying injuries and perjury. I need immediate intervention.”
He slammed the phone down, turned to face the room, and adjusted his tie, his face completely professional.
He looked directly at Caroline.
“Nurse Thompson,” Dr. Cromwell said, his voice softening slightly. “You are cleared of all charges. You will return to your normal duties immediately. This entire incident will be permanently expunged from your record.”
Caroline didn’t smile. She didn’t celebrate. She simply gave a short, respectful nod.
“Thank you for your time, Doctor,” Caroline said quietly.
Dr. Cromwell turned his furious glare back to Melanie and Tammy.
