Chapter 245:
Caroline lowered the phone. Her hands were shaking violently. I’m sorry, Julian, she thought, her stomach twisting with guilt. I have to hurt you to keep you away from this danger. She had just destroyed the only genuine friendship she had left.
She stood alone in the massive, silent kitchen, the blinking red light staring down at her, feeling entirely swallowed by the dark, suffocating cage Jarrod had built around her.
At 4:00 p.m., Caroline was sitting on the living room sofa, staring blankly at the wall, when her phone chimed with a new email notification.
She opened it. It was an official message from the hospital’s Human Resources department.

Notice to Nurse Thompson: Your critical evaluation shift has been officially rescheduled due to a documented personal emergency. Your probationary period is extended by one week pending the completion of this shift.
Caroline stared at the screen. Jarrod hadn’t just excused her absence; he had used his absolute power to freeze the entire medical evaluation board, forcing them to bend their ironclad rules and grant her an unprecedented extension rather than firing her on the spot.
She felt a complex, bitter knot of emotions tighten in her chest. Resentment simmered beneath the surface — he had interfered again, reshaped her life without asking, wielded his power like a battering ram against the walls of her independence. But beneath the resentment, an exhausted, pragmatic part of her recognized the cold calculus of survival. She was a woman living under an active assassination threat, and his interference had just bought her another week of breathing room. She didn’t have to like it. She just had to survive it.
The private elevator chimed. The heavy steel doors slid open.
Jarrod stepped into the penthouse. He wore a dark, long-sleeved tactical sweater and black trousers — clothing loose enough to accommodate the rigid outline of the field splint still bracing his right shoulder. He looked exhausted, carrying a black leather briefcase, but the moment his dark eyes found her on the sofa, the hard lines of his face softened.
Caroline stood up. She was too tired to fight tonight. That was the truth. Not surrender. Not forgiveness. Just a temporary ceasefire born of sheer depletion.
She walked up to him and held up her phone.
“I wasn’t fired,” Caroline said, her voice flat but not hostile. “Even though your methods were completely unethical.”
Jarrod dropped his briefcase onto the floor. He stepped into her space, looking down at her with a heavy, expectant gaze.
“If you’re happy,” Jarrod murmured, his voice a low rumble, “where is my reward?”
Caroline didn’t argue. She stepped into his chest, went up on her tiptoes, and pressed a soft, deliberate kiss to the corner of his mouth. It was not a kiss of passion or surrender — it was an acknowledgment, a tactical concession, a message delivered in the only language he seemed to understand.
Jarrod’s entire body went rigid. His breath hitched, his eyes darkening instantly with shock and heat.
Before he could grab her waist to deepen the kiss, Caroline stepped back with a small, measured smile.
“To celebrate,” Caroline announced, “I am cooking dinner. We are going to the grocery store.”
