Chapter 380:
Caroline wiped at her wet cheeks with the back of her hand, her expression still cold and unforgiving. “There’s nothing to talk about,” she said, her voice flat. “Not until I’ve dealt with what needs to be dealt with.”
Her focus was singular, absolute. Melanie.
Jarrod looked at the unyielding set of her jaw, the dangerous light in her eyes. He knew he couldn’t stop her. Not without breaking her completely. He made a choice.
“Fine,” he said, his voice a low growl of surrender. “Go. I’ll wait for you outside.”
It was a concession, a retreat. An offering.
Caroline didn’t acknowledge it. She just gave him one last, hard look before turning and walking out of the room, leaving him alone with the silent, sleeping form of her father.
She walked with purpose, her grief and fear now channeled into a single, burning point of rage. She went straight to the nurses’ station.
“Where’s Melanie Thorne?” she asked the unit clerk, her voice calm and level.
The clerk, startled by her tone, fumbled with the schedule. “Uh, she’s on her break. Probably in the staff lounge.”

Caroline didn’t say thank you. She walked toward the lounge, her footsteps silent and measured. Each step was a countdown.
She pushed open the door without knocking.
Melanie was there, sitting at a table with a few other nurses, a cup of coffee in her hand. She was laughing, her head thrown back, basking in the attention. When she saw Caroline, her smile widened into a malicious, triumphant smirk.
“Well, well,” Melanie said, her voice dripping with condescension. “Look what the cat dragged in. Did you finish writing that resignation letter, Thompson?”
The other nurses at the table fell silent, their eyes darting between the two women.
Caroline ignored the question. She walked directly to the table and stopped in front of Melanie. Her face was a blank mask.
Then, in one smooth, deliberate motion, she picked up Melanie’s coffee cup and emptied its lukewarm contents directly over Melanie’s head.
Brown liquid streamed down Melanie’s face and hair, dripping onto her clean, white scrubs. She let out a shocked, furious shriek.
“You’re insane!” she screamed, jumping to her feet and lunging at Caroline, her hands clawed, aiming for her hair.
Caroline moved with a speed and precision that was terrifying. She caught Melanie’s wrist in mid-air.
Caroline’s strength was unnatural. It wasn’t the strength of an angry nurse; it was the practiced, economical violence of a professional.
She leaned in close, her face inches from Melanie’s, her voice a low, chilling whisper that only Melanie could hear. “You think this is the end of it?”
Fear, real and stark, flashed in Melanie’s eyes.
“I’m filing a formal complaint with the nursing board,” Caroline said, her words clipped and precise, each one a hammer blow. “For HIPAA violations. For patient endangerment. For creating a hostile work environment. I will see to it that you are not only fired from this hospital, but that your license is revoked. You will never work as a nurse again.”
Melanie’s face went slack with horror. The color drained from her cheeks. This was a threat to her entire future, her entire identity.
