Chapter 357:
Donovan reached out through an intermediary. Arranged for a specialist from Johns Hopkins. I wanted to refuse. I wanted to protect my family from his intrusion. But this is for Caroline. I can’t let my pride stand in the way of her health. So I accepted his help. But I made it clear: he stays in the shadows. Caroline’s world is not to be disturbed. She is my daughter. Not his.
A strange, unspoken truce had existed between the two men for two decades. Walter provided the love, the daily care, the scraped knees and bedtime stories. Donovan, the silent, invisible benefactor, provided a financial safety net for emergencies too big for them to handle. His one condition was that he remain a ghost, that Caroline’s world never be disturbed by his existence.
And now Walter was gone. The man who had stood between Caroline and Donovan had been laid to rest. And Donovan had come to claim what he believed was his.
A cold fury surged through her. He had waited. He had respected the truce only as long as Walter was alive to enforce it. And now, with her father barely cold in the ground, he had come to collect his prize.

She closed the journal and held it against her chest, as if it were a piece of her father himself. Donovan Sinclair could show up on her doorstep with all the money and power in the world. It wouldn’t matter. Walter Thompson was her father. The only one who mattered.
She looked at the photograph on the desk—her father’s smiling face, his arm around her shoulders, both of them grinning at the camera on her nursing school graduation day.
I’ll make you proud, Dad, she promised silently. I’ll protect your memory. I won’t let him erase you.
She stood up, her grief transformed into a fierce, protective resolve. She was her father’s daughter. And no stranger, no matter what blood ran through his veins, was going to change that.
Two weeks passed. Caroline threw herself back into work, using the exhausting rhythm of the hospital to drown out the chaos in her mind. She didn’t call Donovan Sinclair. She didn’t even look at his business card, which she’d thrown into a drawer and tried to forget.
But the revelation had changed something in her. She found herself looking at old photographs differently, searching for features she might have inherited from a stranger. She caught herself wondering about the man who had fathered her—not as a father, but as a puzzle piece in the mystery of her own identity.
She told no one. Not Brenna. Not Julian. Certainly not Jarrod, who was still deployed and unreachable. This was her secret to carry, her wound to tend. She buried it deep and kept moving.
It was a Wednesday night when everything changed again. Caroline was pulling a double shift, covering for a colleague, when the call came.
She was in the middle of checking vitals when her phone buzzed with an unfamiliar number. She almost ignored it. But something made her step into the hallway and answer.
“Is this Caroline Thompson?” The voice was professional, clipped. “This is Dr. Brennan Foster, at Washington General’s neurology department. You’re listed as the emergency contact for a patient. Donovan Sinclair.”
Caroline’s blood ran cold. “What happened?”
