Chapter 427:
“Julian,” she cut him off. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it had a new weight, a core of tempered steel that made him fall silent. “The way I’m worried is the way a wife worries about her husband.”
She emphasized the words, drawing a clear, undeniable line in the sand.
He stared at her, his brow furrowing. The news wasn’t new to him—he’d heard it before, in a hospital corridor, from Jarrod himself. But hearing it from her, stated so plainly and without hesitation, still hit him like a physical blow. He’d spent weeks trying to convince himself it wasn’t real, that it was some ploy or exaggeration. Her calm, unwavering declaration shattered that illusion.
“Wife,” he repeated, the word a choked whisper. “I knew… I mean, I heard before. But I didn’t think it was really—” He broke off, shaking his head. “That’s… that’s truly what you want?”
Caroline met his bloodshot gaze without flinching. She let the words hang in the air, each one a heavy, deliberate stone dropped into the quiet hallway.
“Jarrod and I,” she said, her voice perfectly clear, “we’re married.”
The color drained from Julian’s face. He looked as if she had physically struck him. He shook his head, a small, jerky motion of denial.
“I knew,” he said, the words strained and raw. “Back in the hospital, when I heard him say it—I didn’t want to believe it was real. I thought maybe… maybe it was just him staking a claim. But you…”
He fell silent for a moment, his jaw working as if he were physically chewing on the information. The shock was there, raw and naked on his face, but beneath it, something else flickered. The anger she’d braced for never came. Instead, his shoulders sagged, and when he spoke again, his voice was quieter, laced with a weary, genuine concern.
“Caroline… I just… are you sure? I mean, a man like him, the world he lives in… it’s dangerous. Not just for him. For you.”

“The amount of time,” Caroline said, her voice cool and even, “has nothing to do with it.”
He took a breath, steadying himself. “I’m not trying to… attack him. Or you. I just… I worry about you. You’ve been through so much already. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
He was trying to pry, but the scalpel had been replaced by a blunt, clumsy hand. The malice was gone; only the desperate, misguided care remained.
Caroline gave a single, sharp nod. “My decisions are my own. I know what I’m doing.”
The confirmation seemed to settle something in him. He couldn’t comprehend it, but he could see the steel in her eyes. He wouldn’t win this.
“I’m not trying to diminish what you have,” he said, his voice heavy. “I just… I hope you’re right. I hope he’s everything you think he is.”
Her eyes, which had been calm, softened slightly. “He is. And besides,” she added, her voice dropping slightly, “he is Jarrod. That’s enough.”
She didn’t need to explain further. The name itself was the explanation. It was the power, the danger, the unwavering intensity that Julian could never understand and could never hope to match.
