Chapter 308:
The red taillights of the yellow cab disappeared around the sharp bend of the mountain road. Their departure plunged Caroline into absolute, suffocating darkness.
The freezing rain lashed against her face like tiny, icy needles. It instantly soaked through her hoodie and cargo pants, chilling her skin to the bone.
She reached into her duffel bag and clicked on her tactical flashlight. The high-lumen beam cut a narrow, shaky path through the driving rain, illuminating the muddy ground ahead.
Caroline began the trek up the steep, unpaved shoulder of the mountain road. Her heavy boots sank deep into the thick, sucking mud with every step.

The wind howled fiercely through the tall pine trees. It created a deafening roar that drowned out the sound of her own ragged breathing.
With every step, the fever burned hotter in her veins. Her muscles ached with a deep, throbbing agony, protesting the extreme physical exertion.
She forced herself to keep a steady marching pace. She relied entirely on the grueling endurance training from her intelligence days, commanding her body to move past its limits.
Half a mile in, disaster struck. Her right boot slipped on a wet, moss-covered rock hidden beneath a layer of slick mud.
She went down hard. Her right knee slammed violently into the jagged stone. The impact tore the thick fabric of her cargo pants and drew hot blood.
Caroline gasped loudly. The sharp, piercing pain cut straight through the hazy fog of her fever. She forced herself back to her feet, limping heavily on her right leg.
The cold seeped deep into her bones. Her teeth began chattering uncontrollably. The early stages of hypothermia were rapidly setting in, dulling her motor skills.
Her vision narrowed to a tight tunnel. The edges of her sight blurred with dark, swimming spots as her blood pressure dropped dangerously low.
Delirium began to creep into her exhausted mind. She hallucinated the sound of her mother’s voice, calling her name softly in the howling wind.
She shook her head violently. She tried to clear the auditory hallucination, but tears finally spilled from her eyes, mixing with the freezing rain on her pale face.
She pulled the encrypted satellite phone from her wet pocket. She clutched the heavy black plastic against her chest like a physical lifeline.
She whispered Jarrod’s name over and over. It became a desperate, broken mantra, the only thing keeping her legs moving forward in the dark.
Another mile passed in agonizing slow motion. Finally, the massive, twelve-foot chain-link fence of the military perimeter loomed in the shaky beam of her flashlight.
The fence was topped with thick coils of razor wire. It was interspersed with high-tech motion sensors and infrared security cameras mounted on steel poles.
Caroline stumbled toward the fence. Her energy reserves were completely depleted. Her lungs burned fiercely, desperate for oxygen.
She reached out. Her bare, freezing fingers wrapped around the cold, wet steel of the chain-link mesh.
She intended to follow the fence line to the main security gate. But her legs simply refused to support her weight for another second.
