Chapter 404:
That was it. The key. The explanation that unlocked every wrong conclusion he had drawn. It wasn’t rejection; it was fear of failure.
Slowly, he turned in her arms to face her. He lifted his hands and cupped her face, his thumbs gently stroking her tear-stained cheeks. All the anger, all the hurt, had vanished from his eyes, replaced by a deep, aching tenderness.
“Why didn’t you just tell me?” he asked, his voice a low, gravelly whisper full of regret for the pain he’d caused.
She looked down, ashamed. “I thought… I thought I could handle it on my own.”
He used his thumb to wipe a tear from her cheek, and then, with the same thumb, he gently smeared away the drying blood on his own lip.
“You’re a fool, Caroline Thompson,” he murmured, but the words were an endearment.
He leaned down and pressed a soft, reverent kiss to her damp eyelashes. “It’s okay,” he whispered against her skin. “We can go slow. We can practice. A lot.”
The implication in his words, the gentle, teasing promise, sent a wave of heat through her. She let out a watery laugh and playfully swatted at his chest.
He caught her hand easily, a genuine smile finally reaching his eyes. “See? First you bite me, now you’re hitting me. Domestic violence is a serious issue in the Romero household.”
His joke, so perfectly timed, so utterly absurd, broke the last of the tension. She laughed for real this time, a sound of pure relief, and all the fear and hurt washed away.
“I never stood a chance of being respectable with you,” he said, his smile fading into something more serious as he looked into her eyes.

It was the most honest declaration of love he could make.
He lowered his head again. This kiss wasn’t a search for truth or a desperate claim. It was a question, soft and full of a love that was patient and sure.
Caroline closed her eyes, rose up on her toes, and answered him with everything she had. In that kiss, all the contracts and conditions, all the fear and misunderstanding, dissolved. Their marriage, forged in crisis and defined by conflict, had finally, truly begun.
Caroline woke to the soft gray light of dawn filtering into the room. Every muscle in her body ached with a deep, pleasant soreness, a physical reminder of a night spent relearning what it meant to be close to someone.
The space beside her in the bed was empty, but the sheets were still warm.
A vivid montage of the night’s events flashed through her mind—the fierce tenderness, the whispered words, the shocking, uninhibited passion. A hot blush crept up her neck and flooded her cheeks. The Colonel, so controlled and commanding on the battlefield, was an entirely different kind of force in the bedroom. A relentless, insatiable beast. She made a mental note to attribute his stamina to his rigorous military physical training; it was the only logical explanation.
