Chapter 88:
Caroline flinched. Her back slammed hard against the leather seat. Her eyes locked onto the distinct, curved bite mark he had just left in the bread.
Jarrod didn’t pull his hand back. He pushed it one inch closer.
“Eat it,” Jarrod commanded. His tone was low and absolute. “You are not going to face an interrogation on an empty stomach.”
Caroline locked her jaw. She turned her head sharply to the side, staring out the window.
“I am not eating that,” she said stubbornly. “I would rather starve.”
At that exact second, her empty stomach let out a loud, hollow growl. The sound echoed clearly in the quiet, soundproof cabin.
A wave of intense heat rushed up Caroline’s neck. Her face burned all the way to the tips of her ears. She wanted to rip the heavy car door open and throw herself into the morning traffic.
Jarrod let out a low, deep laugh. The sound vibrated through the air, completely shattering her tough exterior.
The amusement vanished from his face. His expression turned dark and dangerously serious.
“If you do not take a bite right now,” Jarrod warned, his voice dropping to a seductive, threatening whisper, “I will chew it and feed it to you from my own mouth.”
Caroline’s eyes snapped wide open. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. She remembered the crushing, suffocating kiss from last night. She knew he was completely insane enough to do it.

She swallowed the thick lump of humiliation in her throat and slowly turned her head back, closing her eyes, unable to look at his smug face.
She leaned forward, carefully aiming for the far corner of the sandwich, completely avoiding the spot where his lips had touched, and took a tiny, hesitant bite. She pulled back and chewed quickly.
Jarrod watched her. His dark eyes softened. He didn’t move his arm. He sat perfectly still, acting as a human plate while she chewed like a terrified rabbit.
The dry bread stuck in Caroline’s throat. She coughed softly. Her eyes darted down to the brown paper bag resting on the seat between them. Inside was a cheap paper cup of hot black coffee.
Jarrod followed her gaze. He reached down with his left hand and pulled the cup out of the bag.
Caroline reached her hand out to take it.
Jarrod completely ignored her hand. He lifted the cup, brought the plastic lid to his own lips, and took a large swallow of the steaming liquid.
Caroline stopped chewing. Her jaw dropped. A fresh wave of hot anger exploded in her chest. He was deliberately invading every single piece of her personal space.
Jarrod swallowed the coffee. He grimaced again.
“This smells like burning rubber,” he stated flatly.
He lowered the cup and pressed it directly into Caroline’s waiting hand, his warm fingertips deliberately brushing against the sensitive skin of her knuckles.
Caroline gripped the warm paper cup. She stared at the tiny droplets of moisture resting on the edge of the plastic sip hole. Her heart rate spiked to a frantic, uncontrollable speed.
