Chapter 28:
Caroline’s face was burning with a heat so intense she felt dizzy. The sheer, mortifying embarrassment of being caught by her own mother sent a surge of frantic adrenaline through her veins.
“Let me up!” she hissed, her voice trembling with panic. She pushed her palms hard against Jarrod’s chest, trying to leverage herself off his lap.
Jarrod let out a low, rough sigh. The interruption had clearly frustrated him. For a fraction of a second, the iron grip of his arm around her waist loosened as he shifted his weight.
Caroline seized the tiny window of opportunity. She planted her hands on his shoulders and jerked her body upward with all her might.
As she pushed frantically, her hands slipped on the smooth cashmere of his coat. The sudden loss of purchase sent her lurching forward, her face colliding with his before she could stop herself.
Caroline’s lips smashed hard against Jarrod’s mouth.
Time stopped.

The impact sent a shockwave through her skull. Caroline’s eyes were wide open, staring blankly at the dark, thick lashes framing Jarrod’s stunned gray eyes just millimeters from her own. Her brain completely flatlined.
She could feel the firm, slightly rough texture of his lips against hers. She could feel the sudden, sharp intake of his breath, expanding his chest against hers.
Panic finally pierced through her shock. She whimpered, planting her hands on his chest to shove herself away.
But Jarrod’s reflexes were terrifyingly fast.
The shock in his eyes vanished, instantly replaced by a dark, consuming fire. His left hand shot out and buried itself in the hair at the back of her head. His long fingers gripped her scalp, locking her face exactly where it was.
This was no longer an accident.
Jarrod tilted his head slightly, adjusting the angle, and kissed her.
He didn’t ask for permission. He took control with a predatory, overwhelming dominance. His lips parted hers, demanding entry, and the kiss deepened with a sudden, explosive intensity that stole the air from her lungs.
Caroline let out a muffled gasp against his mouth. Her fingers, which had been pushing against his chest, slowly curled inward, gripping the fabric of his shirt.
Her entire body went weak. The masculine scent of cedar and heat wrapped around her like a heavy blanket. The kiss was aggressive, fueled by raw possessiveness, yet his hand cradling the back of her head was incredibly careful, almost reverent.
Every logical thought in her brain screamed at her to pull away, to fight him. But the somatic overload was too much. Her heart was beating so violently it hurt. A heavy, pooling warmth spread through her stomach.
Without realizing it, her lips softened. She let out a tiny, breathless sigh and kissed him back.
Jarrod felt her surrender. A low groan vibrated deep in his chest. His grip on her hair tightened, and he pulled her closer, kissing her harder, deeper, consuming her entirely.
They were teetering on the edge of complete freefall.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
A sharp, piercing electronic alarm shattered the heavy, heated air of the living room.
