Chapter 179:
Eva Rostova leaned forward, her voice smooth and laced with false concern. “It’s not personal, Caroline. It’s about fairness. People are starting to feel that the standard rules don’t apply to you. They’re afraid to speak up, worried that if they cross you, they’ll be transferred to the night shift in the morgue. It’s creating a chilling effect on morale.”
The junior nurses nodded in unison, their eyes wide and rehearsed.
Dr. Finchley looked at Caroline. His eyes held a silent warning. This was a far more sophisticated attack than Melanie’s crude lies. It was an accusation that was nearly impossible to disprove because it was based on perception and fear, not a single, verifiable event.
Everyone in the room stared at Caroline. They were waiting for her to get defensive, to deny it angrily, to give them the emotional outburst they could use against her.
Caroline slowly pulled out the leather chair at the end of the table. She sat down. She crossed her legs and folded her arms casually over her chest.
Her posture was not that of a subordinate facing termination. It was the relaxed, terrifying posture of an apex predator assessing its prey.
Caroline looked directly at the HR director. Her gray eyes were completely devoid of emotion.
“An accusation of leveraging ‘external connections’ is a serious claim,” Caroline stated. Her voice was smooth, cold, and incredibly precise. “It implies quid pro quo and abuse of power. I assume, for an inquiry of this gravity, you have more than just ‘chilling effects’ and staff ‘feelings’ to go on.”
The HR director blinked, caught off guard by her clinical tone. “Excuse me?”
“I want to see the evidence,” Caroline demanded, her voice slicing through the room like a scalpel. “Show me the emails. Show me the text messages. Show me the documented proof of me communicating with hospital administration to request these staff reassignments. Show me a single piece of paper that connects me to any decision made about another employee’s career.”
The HR director shifted uncomfortably in his chair. “Well, Ms. Thompson, the evidence is circumstantial, based on the pattern of events—”

“Circumstantial?” Caroline cut him off with a sharp, humorless laugh. She turned her head and locked eyes with Eva.
Eva flinched, but held her gaze.
“If we’re operating on circumstantial evidence and subjective feelings,” Caroline said, her lips curling into a cruel smile, “then I would like to file a counter-complaint. I’ve noticed Nurse Rostova spends an inordinate amount of time in Dr. Finchley’s office with the door closed. Her rapid rise through the committee assignments is, circumstantially, quite suspicious. It creates a ‘chilling effect’ on me, making me feel that professional advancement here is tied to things other than merit.”
Eva’s face flushed a violent, angry red. She slammed her hands on the table.
“How dare you!” Eva shrieked, her composure cracking. “You think you’re so untouchable! We all see how you operate, gliding through the rules. You’re not one of us!”
Caroline did not blink. She uncrossed her arms and leaned forward. It was time to end this pathetic game.
The echo of Eva’s shriek faded, leaving a suffocating, dead silence in the conference room.
The HR director frowned deeply, clearly unhappy with Caroline’s blatant counter-attack. He tapped his pen aggressively against the mahogany table.
