Chapter 283:
Jarrod watched her with a fond, predatory gleam in his eye. “Go take a hot shower and relax. The war is over for today.”
Caroline eagerly headed into the massive, slate-tiled master bathroom, locking the heavy glass door behind her.
She stripped off the heavy velvet gown. She stepped under the steaming cascade of the rain showerhead, letting the hot water wash away the tension of the day. As she turned, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the steam-fogged glass. She saw the faint, purplish outlines of fingerprints on her ribs, a stark reminder of Jarrod’s frantic possession in the SUV.
Twenty minutes later, Caroline turned off the water, feeling completely rejuvenated. She reached for a towel, only to realize a fatal error.

Her mind had been racing so fast, constantly replaying the confrontation with Cornelia and analyzing every tiny detail for potential future threats, that she had completely neglected the mundane task of bringing her pajamas or fresh underwear into the bathroom.
She wrapped a fluffy white towel around her body, securing it tightly above her breasts. She cautiously cracked the bathroom door open.
The master bedroom was dimly lit by the bedside lamps. Jarrod was nowhere to be seen. The coast seemed clear.
Caroline took a deep breath and stepped out of the bathroom. She tiptoed across the thick carpet toward her walk-in closet.
Just as she reached the halfway point, the heavy oak door of the bedroom clicked open. Jarrod walked in, balancing a glass of water in his left hand, his right arm remaining carefully braced and immobile against his side.
He stopped dead in his tracks. The glass in his left hand froze mid-air. His dark eyes locked onto Caroline’s scantily clad form.
The towel barely covered her thighs. Droplets of water slid down her collarbone, glistening in the dim light.
Caroline froze, her tactical instincts momentarily overshadowed by the unexpected intimacy of the moment. Her hands instinctively flew up to clutch the knot of the towel.
A heavy, charged silence descended upon the room. Jarrod’s gaze slowly traveled from her bare shoulders down to her wet, bare feet. His pupils dilated.
“You… you knew I forgot my clothes,” Caroline stammered, her face flushing crimson. “You deliberately didn’t remind me.”
Jarrod slowly set the glass down on the nightstand using his left hand. He didn’t deny it. A wicked, unapologetic smirk curved his lips.
He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, careful to keep his injured right side from being jostled. His imposing frame cast a long shadow over her, the air crackling with sexual tension.
Caroline took a step back. Her heart hammered against her ribs. “Jarrod, don’t try anything funny.”
Jarrod lunged forward, but with calculated precision, he used his left hand to snatch the massive, heavy goose-down comforter off the bed.
With a swift, fluid motion of his left arm, he wrapped the comforter entirely around Caroline, swaddling her like a burrito and completely neutralizing her escape while covering her body.
