Chapter 311:
The stretcher burst through the heavy double doors of the base medical bay. The rubber wheels squeaked loudly on the pristine linoleum floor.
Dr. Evelyn Reed, the senior medical officer, rushed out of her glass-walled office. She snapped a pair of blue latex gloves onto her hands with a sharp crack.
She barked rapid orders at her nursing staff. She directed the medics to push the stretcher immediately into Trauma Bay Alpha.
Corporal Riley and Captain Hayes followed them into the room. They stood back against the white tiled wall, keeping out of the medical team’s way.
Dr. Reed grabbed a pair of heavy trauma shears. She quickly cut away Caroline’s soaked, muddy hoodie and the torn fabric of her cargo pants, revealing her freezing, bruised skin.
She took a core temperature reading using a tympanic thermometer. She cursed under her breath as the digital display registered a dangerously high 104 degrees.

Dr. Reed ordered immediate heated IV fluids. She shouted for broad-spectrum antibiotics to combat the severe fever and likely pneumonia setting into the lungs.
A male combat medic stepped forward. He held a thick-gauge needle attached to an IV line. He swabbed the crook of Caroline’s pale arm with a cold alcohol wipe.
The sharp, stinging chemical smell of the alcohol penetrated Caroline’s fever-induced delirium.
A deeply buried trigger tripped inside her mind. Her eyes snapped open. They were glazed, unfocused, and wild. She let out a feral, guttural hiss that sounded entirely inhuman.
With terrifying speed, she twisted her upper body. She struck the medic’s wrist with a precise, bone-jarring chop using the edge of her hand.
The needle flew out of the medic’s hand. It clattered harmlessly against the stainless steel sink across the room.
The medic stumbled backward. He clutched his bruised wrist in shock, completely bewildered by the sudden, violent attack from a woman who looked half-dead.
Caroline scrambled backward on the gurney. She pulled her knees tight to her chest. She adopted a flawless, defensive combat crouch, her muscles coiled tight.
She glared at the medical staff. Her breathing was ragged. She muttered fragmented, defensive phrases about refusing to break and not giving up the intel.
Dr. Reed raised her hands in a slow, placating gesture. She spoke in a calm, soothing voice, desperately trying to de-escalate the sudden hostility.
Caroline ignored her words. Her eyes darted rapidly around the small room. She assessed the exits, the personnel, and potential weapons, entirely trapped in a violent flashback.
Captain Hayes stepped forward from the wall. His hand rested instinctively on the grip of his holstered sidearm. He now viewed her as an active, unpredictable threat inside the medical bay.
Corporal Riley quickly intervened. He stepped directly in front of Hayes, blocking his path. He argued loudly that she was just delirious from the fever and terrified.
Dr. Reed ordered another medic to prepare a liquid oral sedative. She hoped to calm the patient down without triggering another violent reaction to needles.
The medic approached the gurney cautiously. He held out a small plastic cup filled with clear liquid medication.
