Chapter 223:
The General slammed the heavy silver head of his cane against the marble floor. The sound echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous foyer.
“Stop right there!” the General roared, his voice vibrating with absolute authority.
Jarrod’s combat boots skidded to a halt on the marble. But he didn’t look at his grandfather. His bloodshot eyes were locked onto the top of the staircase, staring toward the third floor. His chest heaved violently.
“Do you have any idea what you have done?” the General shouted, his face turning red. “I just received a call from the Secretary of Defense! You abandoned a classified forward operating base! You are facing a general court-martial! You have disgraced this family!”
Jarrod slowly turned his head to look at the old man.
A low, dark, terrifying laugh scraped out of Jarrod’s throat. It sounded like sandpaper on bone.
“A court-martial?” Jarrod rasped, his voice dripping with absolute contempt. “Tell them to take a number and wait in line. I don’t have time for their politics right now.”
The sheer, naked arrogance of the response made the General’s blood boil.
“You arrogant fool,” the General hissed, stepping forward, deciding to drop the ultimate weapon. “Caroline told me everything last night. She told me about the helicopters. She told me about the armed guards. You used military assets to kidnap a civilian and force her into a marriage!”
Behind Jarrod, K.C. Bell jogged through the broken front doors. Hearing the General’s accusation, Bell winced, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. He had been the one holding the rifle at the courthouse.
The General pointed a shaking finger at Jarrod’s chest. “You acted like a common thug! You dragged the Romero name through the mud!”

Jarrod didn’t flinch. He didn’t look ashamed. The muscles in his neck corded as he took a slow, heavy step toward the General.
The physical size difference was massive. Jarrod loomed over the old man, radiating a suffocating wave of heat and violence.
“So what?” Jarrod whispered, his voice dropping to a lethal, vibrating frequency. “Are you going to call the police on me, Grandfather? Are you going to have me arrested?”
The General’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He was completely paralyzed by the absolute, psychopathic lack of remorse in his grandson’s eyes.
Jarrod leaned down, bringing his face inches from the General’s.
“She is mine,” Jarrod stated, enunciating every word with terrifying possessiveness. “I don’t care what laws I had to break to put my ring on her finger. I don’t care what this family thinks of her.”
Jarrod suddenly stood up straight. He turned his head, his bloodshot eyes sweeping the dark corners of the foyer, addressing the shadows where he knew the staff and family members were hiding.
“Listen to me very carefully,” Jarrod roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling like thunder. “If anyone in this house ever tries to touch her again… if anyone even looks at her the wrong way… I will snap their neck and crush their bones into dust!”
