Chapter 230:
Caroline took a deep breath, extended her index finger, and poked Jarrod hard in the center of his uninjured pectoral muscle.
“Wake up,” Caroline said clearly.
Jarrod’s reflexes were unnerving. He didn’t groan or stretch. His eyes simply snapped open. For a fraction of a second, they were blank and alert, ready for danger. Then his vision focused on Caroline’s face. The tension melted away, replaced by a heavy, lazy warmth.
His voice was a deep, gravelly purr. “Morning.”
He leaned forward, pressing a slow, heavy, possessive kiss against her forehead.
Caroline pushed his chin away with the palm of her hand, keeping her expression strictly professional.
“It is eight o’clock, Colonel,” Caroline stated, her voice brisk. “You need to report to the Pentagon and explain why you went AWOL. And I need to get up. I have a shift at the hospital.”
The word “hospital” acted like a switch.
The lazy warmth in Jarrod’s eyes vanished instantly. The muscles in his jaw locked with an audible click. He remembered the intelligence report from K.C. Bell. The cleaners at her apartment. The active assassination threat.
Jarrod sat up. The duvet fell to his waist, exposing the full, bruised expanse of his torso. He looked down at her, his expression hardening into absolute, unbreakable granite.
“You are not going to the hospital,” Jarrod commanded. His voice left zero room for negotiation. “You are not leaving this estate. You are going to stay in this room until I tell you otherwise.”

Caroline sat up, crossing her arms over her chest. She glared at him, her own stubbornness flaring to life.
“I am not a prisoner, Jarrod,” Caroline fired back, her voice rising. “I cannot let them think they’ve won. I have to go back; that hospital is my battlefield right now. There are personal items I need to retrieve.”
She moved to slide off the edge of the bed to find her sweater.
Before her feet could touch the floor, Jarrod’s hand shot out. His massive fingers clamped around her ankle like a steel trap, instantly halting her movement.
He pulled her leg back onto the mattress and leaned over her, his shadow completely blocking out the sunlight.
“I don’t care about your job,” Jarrod said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet intensity. “There are things happening outside this room that you do not understand. You are staying here. Even if I have to physically tie you to this bedframe to make it happen.”
Caroline stared up at him, her gray eyes clashing violently with his dark, obsessive stare. The fragile peace of the morning was shattered.
The fragile peace of the morning shattered the second Jarrod’s massive fingers clamped around Caroline’s ankle. His grip was a steel trap, locking her to the mattress.
Caroline did not freeze. Her suppressed operative instincts flared. She twisted her body, lunging toward the edge of the bed. Her hand shot out and grabbed the strap of her cheap black nylon tote bag resting on the carpet.
