Chapter 121:
A guttural, animalistic growl ripped from his throat. He dropped Caroline’s hand and lunged forward, his massive fists clenching, fully prepared to physically destroy Harper in front of two hundred people.
Caroline reacted with blinding speed.
She stepped sideways, throwing her own body directly into Jarrod’s path. She planted both hands flat against the center of his chest, using her entire body weight to physically block his forward momentum.
Jarrod froze, his chest heaving violently against her palms.
Caroline knew that if Jarrod struck a woman in public, he would lose his military commission and the moral high ground forever. She wouldn’t let Harper destroy him.
Caroline turned her head. She looked at Harper with a gaze so devoid of human emotion it made the younger girl physically take a step back.
“Harper,” Caroline said, her voice echoing with chilling, absolute authority. “Nursing is a profession dedicated to saving human lives. If the century-old glory of the Romero family relies on publicly degrading the working class, then your legacy is pathetically fragile.”
Caroline took one step forward, her stilettos clicking like a hammer hitting an anvil.
“As for my right to stand here,” Caroline continued, her voice slicing through the room like a scalpel, “the federal law of the United States and the Colonel’s own free will have already answered that question. Tell me, Harper, other than the last name you were handed at birth, what exactly have you achieved to make you so superior?”
The logic was brutal, flawless, and completely devastating.
Harper’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. Her face turned a violent shade of purple. She had absolutely no counter-argument.

Several older military generals standing in the crowd gave slow, approving nods. They respected a woman who defended the honor of medical workers.
General Augustus watched the entire exchange. His ancient eyes narrowed. He saw how Caroline had physically restrained Jarrod’s worst impulses, and how she had verbally slaughtered Harper without using a single curse word.
The General lifted his heavy ebony cane. He slammed it down against the marble floor.
THWACK.
The sound echoed like a gunshot. Harper instantly clamped her mouth shut, terrified.
“Enough of this embarrassing display,” the General barked, glaring at Harper. “Go to your room immediately. You are making a fool of yourself.”
Harper let out a humiliated sob. She turned and ran out of the hall, pushing through the crowd in absolute disgrace. Cornelia looked at the floor, her face pale with defeat.
The General turned his heavy gaze back to Jarrod and Caroline.
He knew Jarrod was a lone wolf. If he forced the issue now, Jarrod would publicly sever ties with the family, taking his massive military contracts with him. The General was a pragmatist. He knew when to retreat.
“Since you have already completed the military marriage protocols,” the General said, his voice a slow, reluctant grind, “I have no power to overrule the Department of Defense. You have made your bed, Jarrod.”
It was a concession. A highly reluctant, public acknowledgment of her status.
