Chapter 94:
“The interview went fine,” Caroline said, her voice a flat, freezing whisper. “I told them the truth. I never touched your throat, Melanie. Whatever bandage you’re wearing, you put there yourself.”
The words struck Melanie like a physical blow. Her face contorted, the mask of victimhood cracking.
“Liar!” Melanie screamed, her face turning red. “You’re a liar and a whore!”
Melanie lunged forward, swinging her right hand hard and slapping the bottom of Caroline’s paper cup.
The cup flew into the air. The scalding liquid splashed across Caroline’s coat, and a searing, stinging pain exploded across her chest where the coffee soaked through the fabric. She clenched her jaw, swallowing the cry of pain.
Tammy gasped and jumped up from the sofa.
Caroline’s mind, honed by years of training, didn’t panic. It calculated. The threat was non-lethal, impulsive, poorly executed. A civilian lashing out. No weapons. Optimal response: de-escalate, document, report. Engaging physically with a woman who had already filed a complaint against her was exactly what Melanie wanted.
The entire assessment processed in less than a heartbeat.
Before the empty paper cup even hit the floor, Caroline moved.
But she didn’t strike. She didn’t grab. She stepped neatly to the side, creating distance, her hands remaining at her sides.

“Do it again,” Caroline said quietly, “and the security cameras will have exactly what they need.”
Melanie froze mid-lunge, her arm still extended from the slap. Her eyes darted to the corner of the ceiling, where a small black dome camera blinked with a steady red light. The color drained from her face.
“Coward,” Melanie spat, but her voice wavered. “You think you’re untouchable because you’re sleeping with a colonel.”
Caroline didn’t dignify it with a response. She looked past Melanie, directly at Tammy, who was still frozen by the sofa.
“Take her somewhere else,” Caroline said. “Before she does something she can’t walk back.”
Tammy swallowed hard and hurried forward, grabbing Melanie’s arm.
“Come on,” Tammy whispered urgently. “She’s not worth it. Let’s go.”
Melanie yanked her arm free, her chest heaving with rage. Her eyes were wet with tears of pure frustration. The plan had been perfect. Provoke a physical response. Get her on camera fighting back. But Caroline hadn’t taken the bait.
“This isn’t over,” Melanie hissed through her teeth. “I will make sure you never work in this city again.”
She spun on her heel and stormed out of the break room, Tammy scurrying behind her. The heavy door slammed shut.
Caroline stood alone in the flickering fluorescent light.
She looked down at the dark coffee stain spreading across her coat. Her hands were trembling, not from fear, but from the massive exertion of restraint. Every trained instinct in her body had screamed at her to neutralize the threat. She had chosen not to. And that choice had cost her more than any fight ever could.
She picked up a handful of paper napkins from the counter and pressed them against the stain. It was useless. The coat was ruined.
